I think Coca-Cola is up to something??
They did this before but told everyone & almost lost thier ass.
    Anyway
Here's the deal I bought some last week, it was packaged with the Olimpic theme, tasted different less sweet.
I thought taste buds just being weird or something, same thing with second twelve pack.

A couple days ago at different supermarket different city I purchased three 12 packs, two have the Olimpic theme, one is Bears theme older stock (Damn Bears sucked in the playoffs maybe next year)
So poped em in the fridge, had one of those older stock bears labeled Cokes tasted Great!
Thinking about the Coke I had the other day that tasted odd less sweet ( crappy) I poped open one of those other newly purchased olimpic labled Cokes tasted Like Yuck?????
Next thing ya Know I have my own little taste test going!

    What's the Deal?
    Anyone else notice the same?
    Maybe I'm nuts?
I Like Budwiser too But cant drink that all the time, and well "Pepsi" I'd rather lick monkey nuts.

I always found coke to be less sweet than Pepsi which is why you can flop it in a glass with ice cubes and rye, the only time I drink cola. I will notice if the taste changes... but I haven't yet. I agree with the Pepsi and the monkey thing.

you know.. I had gotten sick a few weeks ago and lost my ability to taste sweet things for a while. I had a coke and it tasted awful. I attributed it to the fact that I was sick. I had another one the other day and it too tasted like crap and I am no longer sick. So yeah, I have to agree, they changed something...again. I won't drink coke anymore.

I am addicted to Pepsi. I drink literally six or seven cans a day. I actually had to switch to Caffeine Free Pepsi a few years back, because I would have weird episodes where for no reason my heart would beat a million times per second for a good ten minutes. I don't know what it is, it's just the taste of a cold Pepsi, I love it. I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, never did drugs. I never really considered myself "addicted" to anything (well, maybe Mortal Kombat when it first came out on the Sega Genesis).

I don't know what causes the craving. It's obviously not the caffeine, because I'm drinking caffeine free. Maybe the sugar?

I've tried to wean off of it, like switching to Nestea or Hawaiian Punch, but those have just as much sugar.

Oh well. One day my teeth will all rot out. Chicks like that, right?

Like everything else, I blame my parents for this one. I was raised on junk food.

My name is Steve, and I'm addicted to Pepsi. As for the actual topic of this thread, I don't know, I don't drink that coke crap anyway.

    Viva La Pepsi!!!

i just had coke and it tasted fine, but it wasn't the olympic stuff, probably an old formula, I have always preferred coke over pepsi.

Interesting thread. I was in a meeting yesterday and one of my co-workers opened a diet coke. She thought it tasted awful and had gone bad, so she ditched it and opened another. It tasted just as foul, so I tried it. Now I'm not a coke drinker, and certainly not a diet soda fan, but this tasted of nothing but the artificial sweetner. There was no "coke" taste to it at all...just watery. She ditched that one too. We thought we maybe had abad batch, but now I'm thinking it's the Coke recipe.

I'm a Pepsi drinker. Coke has a food coloring in it that encourages depression in those who are prone to it. It also gives me awful digestive problems. Cleans the toilet great though ;)

I totally think they change the recipe over the holidays. For years I have been a firm beleiver that the Coke with the santa claus on the can tastes better. Every holiday I load up on Santa Can Coke becuase it is sooo much better than the normal stuff.

I think I heard somewhere that they once a year they change the recipe to be kosher for jewish people or something, and that was why the santa can coke tastes different.

I dont know about olympic can or polar bear can, but santa can is great!

I agree that Pepsi is crud! I always ask at restaurants whether they have Coke or Pepsi before ordering. If they say Pepsi, I ask what else they have (usually a root beer, which is a heck of alot better than Pepsi).

I don't know if it has changed its recipe again. It would be a bad idea since the last uproar cost them big time. I have not had any in the Olympic cans yet.

But I wonder if anyone has tried this: http://www.cokezero.com/

Could this be what you are sampling? I tend to doubt you could confuse this with the label on real Coke thought.

From what I am reading, coke drinkers opt for root beer if the brand Coke isn't available. Probably explains, as a pepsi preferred drinker, why I can't stand root beer either :)

No pepsi? I'll have a sierra mist :)

Another little bit of info about Coke (a little off the subject but)...

They advertise on their 12 oz cans and 20 oz bottles of Diet Sprite Zero that there are no calories in them. This is wrong. Their own website at:

    http://www2.coca-cola.com/mail/goodanswer/soft_drink_nutrition.pdf

Shows that an 8 oz serving has 2.4 calories. Thus their 12 oz can has 3.6 calories and their 20 oz bottle has 6 calories.

Seems like false advertising to me. Does is have less then regular soda....yes. But is is not ZERO as advertised.

I decided to give Coke a call about the change in taste on the Olympic calls and also on the calories.

    1) They say that the Coke recipe has not changed since 1886. To that I said not true since they stopped using sugar many years ago. But they said other than that it is still the same recipe and nothing has changed.

    2) To the calories they said the are allow by the FDA to advertise as 0 if the amount is less 5. So since the serving size is 8 oz, they even get away with it on 20 oz or 64 oz bottles. Sneaky. Seems like the FDA needs to rethink their standards for advertisement. To me 0 means 0 not 4.99999 which is less than five. Also since no one sells soft drinks in 8 oz sizes, the serving size should be based on the package size itself (but that's my opinion).

Well on that theory Chas...next time someone tells me my payrise is 0% I'm going to apply the Coca-Cola Math theory and multipy my salary by 4.9999 to get the correct increase :p

Was coke not originally given it's name because it contained some quantity of cocaine in it? Or was that just an old wive's tale? If it is correct, are they telling us it still has the drug in it? ;)

    From Wikipedia
So they lied to you Chas...... :(

  21. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Of course they did! They are liars! ;) Otherwise the sides of their containers would list the correct calorie contents. :D Also they probably forgot all about the fact that they had to change the 1906 change just like they forgot about the migration away from using real sugar to high fructose corn syrup. The change from real sugar resulted in a significant change in taste too.

I still would like to know about these Olympic cans that Asus mentioned. I'll have to find one and try it but I don't one to waste money on a whole case if it is going to taste like crap!

Nothing tastes worse than Pepsi Max.

In fact, anything with artificial sweetners tastes like crap.

Only time I ever drink Pepsi is when I'm forced to, like when I order Pizza Hut (Pepsi own Pizza Hut and KFC, which is why you don't see Coke sold there).

My wife read this thread, she said I was nuts until tryed my taste test.
(Damn I'm runnin out of the good stuff)
She compaired it to like when Mcdonalds or similar doesnt have enough syrup in the mix.

I'm contacting Coke, time ta complain!

I didnt mean to misspell Olympic, Opps, withdraws from the good stuff

I already did and they denied there was any change. But it does not hurt to have everyone complain. Last time when the world was up in arms in a day, they had to change their stance on new Coke rather quickly. But their first statement was that everyone preferred it.

Wow, nice work Chas. Completely agree on the serving size thing. If you wanted to advertise your super deluxe bacon triple cheese burger as having only 5g of fat calories, just state that the serving size is one bite.

From what I can tell, Coke zero tastes exactly like diet coke, might as well be the same thing, aspartame and all.

I just bought a sixer of TAB the other day. Just as good as I remember it (from when I was a kid and anything with sugar was awesome).

EDIT: was posting while you were insomniac. I actually still see TAB for sale alot, usually the grocery store will only have a couple six packs of it on hand (as opposed to a gazillion cases of other sodas), so its still around for you to buy. Probably some cult following has kept it alive or something

Yeah! That's my point. They can basically lie and get away with it because of the stupid guidelines the FDA has created.

I have tried Coke Zero. They are full of crap. It does not taste like regular coke. However, it is not as bad as Diet Coke (or the even worse Diet Caffeine Free Coke). It is closer to real coke than anything else. What I have found is it smells more like real coke and the first taste seems similar but this is noticable difference.

You just cannot fool the coke connoisseur!

As I said, you can't get TAB Cola in Sydney.

I haven't seen it on the shelves of any store in years.

If anyone knows where (here I mean), then tell me instead of saying yes you can.

While those news articles are recent, the change to high fructose corn syrup occurred a very long time ago. It would not have anything to do with what you are experiencing unless they changed the actual ingredients again to use something other than high fructose corn syrup. The sugar complaint existed years ago. I even remember back in the 1980's shipping some Coke (the soda) back from Colombia SA because it still contained sugar and tasted much better.

I doubt that the formula is unchanged too. Especially since the original Coca-Cola was green, and contained cocaine essence. (I was an Industrial Chemist for 15 years, including C.C.A. (Coca-Caola Amital).

There are also other lovely components such as phosphoric acid contained within. The reason so much sweetener is necessary, whether it be from cane sugar, cornsyrup, or artificial, is that the syrups used to make Coke and other soft drinks are so putrid, a 350ml can of Coke needs the equivalent of one quater of a cup of sugar to make it drinkable. Drinks such as Fanta, require the equivalent of half a cup of sugar to make it drinkable. Then of course, they need dosing with CO2 and refrigerated, or else they are foul tasting, again.

And yup, I still drink Coke, LoL! ;)
