Has my Avast program gone crazy?

Whenever I download software programs I scan them with Avast and AVG Anti-spy before installing. As well as wanting to know if a program is infected in any way, I also like to know how many files make up any particular program.
I finally finished downloading Open Office ( I am on dial-up) and was just blown away by the Avast scan of this program. I didn’t time the scan, but it took quite awhile. What was amazing to me was the total number of files it scanned. 53,901 Wow!
It this possible, or has Avast gone crazy?

Consider it's a 120MB download, not surprising it has that great a number of files in it.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take to download on dial-up?

An open office 2.2 installation I have has 273MB in 3279 files.

It sure surprised me that it had that many files. It took 9 hours to download it.
