Does the repair option of your Windows installation disk have the option to run a chkdsk? You could run it on the Windows.old partition from command prompt. I think part of the startup repair (which you ran already) is a chkdsk, but I would still give it a try before considering reinstalling...

Have you tried using a Windows 10 image?

If the machine has sufficiently completed the upgrade, you could be using the wrong OS image for this process. If the upgrade went far enough, you need to roll it back as I explained it post #33.

"When you see that error screen in post #9, press F8 and go to the startup options. If you see "Advanced Options" at the bottom, select it. At that point, you should be able to roll back the operating system."

Sounds like a format and reinstall to me. Probably corruption in the master boot record or (hopefully not) bad sector on the hard drive. Sorry, I'm a jerk. No real solution here, just observation. You mentioned not wanting to spend money, and a Windows 7 install disk (I'm pretty sure) cost like $100 last time I checked. I hope you get this fixed without having to resort to that. Good luck.

    Format please.

There are ways to go about it.If you have no input please do not input.

We can not just sit here on the other side of the planet and see what is happening. If i had the option i would fix it for free. It's kinda hard to see what the other person is seeing.

The issue is this machine is incapable of running Windows 10. The upgrade failed, and it's a fair shake you cannot use a W7 image to roll back the update.

Also, you can get a W7 image for FREE here (amongst others):

I imagine F8 and Advance Boot Options during boot didn't give the option to do a system restore. If there is a restore partition you could try setting it as active. If all else fails you can download your version of Windows listed on the COA sticker and retrieve the missing drivers from Dell.

Would be a good time to familiarize yourself with a Linux live CD to lift any files before going forward.

It doesn't perform a "System Restore".

For at least thirty days post upgrade to Windows 10, it's a "Rollback" option. And, yes it exists.

Please check Secure boot or UEFI is enabled or not in BIOS settings.

I think that's why he uploaded an image to show the error message about the winload.exe file so we can see what the other person is seeing on the other side of the world! Isn't internet amazing?! You replied with info on removing the Windows 10 update logo... LOL. Besides that, I said it sounds like a format and reinstall, while also saying I hope it didn't come to that. He has to be prepared to do that as a last resort. That's my input. Thanks! :)

On a lighter note, since you are able to boot using the USB drive and attempt a repair, but after the repair, it will not boot on its own. It crashes to blue screen referencing the ntdll.dll file... possibly try opening an administrative command prompt and type sfc /scannow making sure the directory is set to the C: drive. I'm a bit pessimistic that this will work since the automatic repair didn't seem to, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

Again, I wish you luck! I'm sure it's not much of a consolation, but this has happened to several others when Microsoft more or less "forced" the Windows 10 update in one last big push a few months back before the deadline to get it for free ended.

The .dll error is most likely because the USB image is the wrong OS.

    You can't repair a W10 install with a W7 image.

Ok have win 7 reinstalled working fine except for 2 issues:

    1. Win update gets stuck on "checking computer for updates" --tried trouble shooting did nothing to help

    2. Computer just randomly cuts off for now particular reason, no error codes, no blue screen, no black screen, just boom off.

    Help any one, please
