Have I been hijacked?

    Hoping for some advice...

I am running Windows XP, I have Norton Internet Security... my problem is that for the last 2 weeks, I notice the "PC/Activity" light on my modem is no longer blinking... it is almost always a steady light. My cable company says my computer is transmitting data.

I ran virus checks/Adaware-se, Spy-bot search and destroy, and followed your instructions on scanning and cleaning... but have not found anything. Someone suggested maybe I have been hijacked, but I am scared of "hijack this" - I mean, I have run it, but I have NO clue what to do with my results.

Any ideas? Does it sound like a hijacking?

If you have run ALL of the steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky then follow the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I have followed ALL the steps in the sticky, and just redid them to verify...

My Hijack This logfile is attached. Thank you for your help!

Is the below something you installed. I'm not saying it is necessarily bad but do you really need it and what is it doing:
    C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Atari Launcher] C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01?FORM=TOOLBR
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [DELDIR0.EXE] "C:\DOCUME~1\Vicki\LOCALS~1\Temp\DELDIR0.EXE" "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\"
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.msn.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://login.passport.net

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
C:\Program Files\McAfee <--- the whole folder since you no longer seem to have McAfee installed.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Okay - I followed all the steps outlined in the last thread.

    1) As for the Atari stuff , that is a game CD that my husband plays - it's been on our computer since we got it.

    2) As to how things are working... my reboot was SO SLOW. My PC/Activity light was on steady. When I opened my browser (Mozilla Firefox now) I notice that every time I click a button or go to a new URL, my light blinked, but now... it is still steady. My CPU left red light, though is blinking now more like normal.

    3) HJT log file is attached.

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes. Each time you kill one keep observing your modem LED to see if there is any affect. Note some of this will probably just restart in a few seconds because they are services.

    C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\EPSON\EBAPI\SAgent2.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\system\em_exec.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe
    C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Action Setup\VAServ.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe
    C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

Let me know what happens! After doing the above you should reboot so that everything starts up again normally. We don't want to potentially leave your system unprotected.

Okay... followed the instructions, and here were my results...

These I was able to "kill" and they had NO effect on PC/Activity light on modem:

    C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\system\em_exec.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe
    C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Action Setup\VAServ.exe
    C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

This one disappeared when I killed the other Atari line...

    C:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\Atari Arcade Hits 1\Atari icon.exe

These, when I attempted to "kill", I got an error message that reads:

"The selected process could not be killed. It may have already been closed, or it may be protected by Windows. This process might be a service, which you can stop from the Services applet in Admin Tools. (To load this window, click Start, Run and enter "services.msc")

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\EPSON\EBAPI\SAgent2.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

My reboot is taking between 1 and 2 minutes, to fully load my toolbar (my Norton antivirus and such). Seems kind of slow now. No change in the PC/Activity light, unless I am clicking a button, as before, in Firefox to navigate somewhere else. Otherwise, it is a steady light.

    Sigh.

I think you should check the manual that came with your modem to see what the behavior of the LEDs is supposed to be. I do not see any other malware issues. We could run a few additional scans to see if anything else is hiding.

Do the below if you want to continue looking for malware.

    - run CCleaner again before doing the below

Download this trial version of Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will have a window come up. One of the buttons on the left is to Update. Click the Update button.and then Start the Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • After it completes the update, click the Scanner button

Now exit Ewido. Now print the below instructions or save them locally because I want you do have no browsers opened and also have no connection to the internet (unplug your cable) while doing the below.

Okay, reboot into safe mode and follow the steps below. (If you have any problems at all trying to get into safe mode to complete these steps, just run them in normal boot mode and make sure you tell me when you come back.)

Open up Ewido and do the following:

    • Click on Scanner
    • Then click Settings
    • Under What to Scan? Select Scan every file
    • Then click OK
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will start.
    • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files that are infected. Leave the defaults selections (to Remove and backup) and click OK. To save yourself some time, you can select Perform action with all infections and then click OK. With the option to scan every file, a lot of cookies will be removed.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop or anyplace you will be able to find it to upload here.
Reboot into normal mode and reconnect to the internet.

Come back here and post the Ewido Scan Report .

Okay, I ran Ewido... although as I am posting this I am NOT sure if I ran the CCleaner again before I ran it (it took about an hour or so). I just don't remember :(

Attached is the Ewido Scan Report.

Okay! That found a few items but I doubt they had any impact.

    Delete the below folder:
    C:\Program Files\AlertSpy

Did you look at the manual for your modem to check LED behavior? What brand and model cable modem is it?

  11. VickiWhite

    VickiWhite Private E-2

    I deleted the AlertSpy.

Yes, I checked the manual for the modem FIRST, and I even called my cable company, who provided the modem. I have had the modem for at least a year. Prior to this, PC/Activity light was always blinking, and it DOES blink now when it is thinking (when I am accessing a web page) and then it goes steady again. The Cable company has told me that this means my computer is transmitting data.

It is a Motorola SB5120 SURFboard Cable Modem.

Are you thinking my problem is not hijacking or malware, but something else? Aside from the modem, is there any other possible explanation?

  12. VickiWhite

    VickiWhite Private E-2

    OH NO....

Okay, I was rechecking the cable modem specs online...and this is what it says...

PC/Activity (SB5100, SB5120 only): Lit solid when connected to computer via Ethernet or USB. Flashes when data is being transferred between the computer and the cable modem.

So... I guess it is fine? Although it USED to blink all the time. I recently switched from my USB port to Ethernet port. If my modem light is fine, I owe you a huge apology. I was freaking out.
