    1. I wanted to get in to Safe Mode on a laptop PC running Win 8.1; therefore, when I pressed the restart button from the power options I also held down the SHIFT key.

    2. In the options that came up I know I selected the wrong one, i.e. not the one to access Safe Mode. I selected automatic repair. It asked me to choose an account. I chose mine, which is the administrator account. Then it asked for my password and after I had entered that it gave me the option to run a repair. I knew this was not what I wanted, so I pressed CANCEL.

    3. The PC then appeared as if it was going to Restart. However, it has not got past the point where the PC manufacturer’s screen comes up. It does not continue to load Windows. It just says on the screen, "acer explore beyond the limits".

    4. I have tried to power the machine off by pressing the PC's on/off button. It is completely unresponsive to anything I do.

    5. There is no access to the battery; consequently I am unable to deprive it of any power by temporarily removing the battery.

First, I would like to know if I have seriously damaged the PC. Secondly, is there anything at all that I can attempt to rectify this problem?

The machine is an Acer Aspire ES1-512-C3FQ. The OS is Windows 8.1.

I thought that if you hold the power button down for 10 seconds the power will turn off.
    Good luck with the journey,

Try disconnecting the mains power and holding the power button down for 30 seconds. However as it has an unremovable battery this may not have any effect. It will have a recovery partition but you may not want to try that until you have had an opportunity to recover your files. Do you have any disks at all?

I am happy to report that no passersby were injured by a PC flying through a window. Thank you to both Stephen_c16 and Earthling and thankfully it restarted itself. I don't know how long. I'd put it to one side and decided to deal with it tomorrow. Later I went to move it and noticed it said the repair had failed. One of the options offered was to shut it down, which I selected. After a few minutes I decided to see what would happen and it's booted up normally.
