    Hello Geeks,

    Seeking your personal opinions....

As a believer in 'if it aint broke dont fix it' I am reluctant to down load
too many anti-virus/firewall/cleaner/spyware etc etc progs - incase they
    interfere with other progs.

I have Norton antivirus/firewall, updated MS criticals & spybot. These
are checked for updates and sweeps every day. I don't dowload games or anything that I am not confident of.

Question: Am I, in your opinions, protected sufficiently ?

    (XP Home, SP2, Broadband)

If using Norton's firewall, did you disable the one in Windows XP SP2. You should not have both enabled.

Did you use Spybot's Immunize feature? You need an application like SpySweeper or SpywareBlaster that blocks spyware. See this link: How to Protect yourself from malware!

Hi Chaslang, thanks for your reply.

Forgive me for being i.t. ignorant, but it's like driving a car - I know what pedals to push, but couldn't adjust the timing belt !

I have a thirst for knowledge, so can you explain why I shouldn't have the sp2 firewall running at the same time as the Norton firewall? and, what does the immunize feature do in 'Spybot' ? AND will 'spysweeper' etc run along side Norton &/or the SP2 firewall ?

Thanks for your patience (perhaps one day I will be able to offer assistance to someone with even less i.t. savvy than me ! (Maybe not)

    Thanks again

Having multiple firewalls can cause conflicts between the two and can cause you more grief in getting things to work since you need to allow/disallow items on both. It also causes additional waste of system resources (cpu cycles & memory) having two processes running and trying to do similar functions simultaneously.

The Immunize feature in Spybot will enter a whole bunch of bad website addresses into your restricted zones of Internet Explorer making it block the ability to go there by mistake (or even on purpose). This protects you from all these baddies.

Yes SpySweeper will run along side the others. Don't forget that SpySweeper is subscription based. You will only get one free update. You can continue to use it and it will work and will block but you will not get updates. If you want to go the all free route, look into SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (they work together and are free). (and yes still keep Spybot).

hey Robbie... i would highly recommend downloading Spyware Blaster offered here at majorgeeks... it's an EXTREMELY simple program to use and you don't have to leave it running in the background or anything in order for it to protect you... all ya do is open it up, update it, and voila... it blocks known spyware active X scripts and cookies and also blocks known spyware websites... i would definetely recommend using this program if you use Internet Explorer as your browser... right now i think it blocks 3300+ known spyware, and many MANY of the coolwebsearch variants....

Hi MiDGeT, haven't seen you in here in awhile!

An even better idea would be to read and follow this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

    hello Chaslang!

I moved out of my apartment at school in mid August and back to Maryland, haven't had my pc connected to the internet for almost 4 months now. No modem in my PC and I haven't ordered broadband yet where i'm currently living (since it's only temporary)...

Can't believe you're still here providing your invaluable help to the spyware infected internet community. Don't know how you do it! :) Glad to see there seem to be a few other Majorgeekers on the forum with a handle on the spyware problem (Philliephan).
