A couple of days ago I was searching a torrent site and got attacked by about 8 Trojans in the space of a couple of minutes AVG picked all of these up and quarrantined them, but ever since I have not been able to run any antivirus software, AVG opens but will not let me scan, Spybot won`t open at all ( I get an error message saying " windows cannot access the specified device, path or file, you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item and it was the same story with a few other antivirus/spyware programs ( malwarebytes anti-malware, Avast ) I have run the Read Me, Run Me First malware removal guide and when I ran superantispyware it removed 4 trojans and 2 rootkits and then rebooted my system, at which point I got the same error message as before, preventing me from getting a log for the scan. Tried downloading Malwarebytes anti - malware running it again and had the same issue as before, it installed fine, started running and then quit a few seconds later. So after running the read me run me procedure I have the RootRepeal log, the combofix log and the MGtools log. Hopefully you guys can help because I am stumped!!!

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
    O23 - Service: Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWService.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    • No download this Win32kDiag and save to C:\Win32kDiag.exe. You must save it here!!!!
    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Now we need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
    • Download this tool and save it to your Desktop: Inherit.exe
    • It must be in your Desktop or the below fix will not work!
Now run the C:\MGtools\FixPerm.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). While this is running, you will get several/many popups that have a title FInish and say OK. Just click the OK button each time. This is an indication that it has found a file and has attempted to fix permissions. Depending on how many files that need to be fixed, you could get only a few or many of these popups.

Now see if you can run scans with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

    Now attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the log from Win32kDiag
    • logs from Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware if they ran
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

Next time you install applications, install them into the proper default program files folder names and not locations like you did with AVG ( i.e, C:\Program Files\averagejoe\avgrsx.exe ).

try running the below AVG Removal tool and then reboot.

    AVG Remover(32bit)

Even if the above does not run properly, just continue on with the below. Some of the below items may no longer exist if the above work properly. Just ignore and continue.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - C:\Program Files\averagejoe\avgpp.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avgrsstx.dll
    O23 - Service: AVG Free8 E-mail Scanner (avg8emc) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\AVERAG~1\avgemc.exe
    O23 - Service: AVG Free8 WatchDog (avg8wd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\AVERAG~1\avgwdsvc.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

Ok here we go logs attached! Installing AVG in a different folder was an attempte to bypass the malware and run AVG to find it, but obviously it did`nt work!!
Still running a bit slowly especially internet, it takes much longer than normal for pages to load, and sometimes links do not work at all!

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

That's right. Using a different folder would never help. Malware does not care about the folders. It cares more about the process names and MD5 codes. Even renaming the executables will not always help and if you rename executables from a program like AVG which has many executables then their own programs will not find their files and the whole package would be broken.

You have a few more AVG left overs to remove.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Your logs were clean otherwise. Since you did not tell me how things were working, I will assume all is good and give you final steps.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

I have cleaned the remaining AVG leftovers and saved the mentioned text as fixme.reg but when I double click on it, I get an error message saying "cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Desktop\fixme.reg, error accessing the registry".

Re: Have run the Read Me, Run Me First Malware Removal Guide and I stll have problem

Most of that registry patch was just a redundant back up for the HJT fix. Let's see if the HJT fix worked.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Ok log attached, system appears to be running fine, if you could give me some direction as to how test the performance of my system (other than task manager and event log) that would be great?
