Have you ever fixed it and not known what you did?

    :-D

Seriously, have you ever fixed an issue and didn't know what the fix was?

My kids' desktop was not allowing Windows updates. There were 6 from January on that kept failing. I didn't know this until I got on to do my period cleaning and maintenance of the computer. I tried all sorts of stuff. Nothing was working. Finally I ordered Recovery Disks for the computer since I figured I'd have to wind up doing a repair.

Before doing that, I found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997

I was going through all the steps. Then the Avira 'blocked Host' thing came up. I disabled the feature. Of course stupid me, I was in the middle of fixing the registry as well.

    The updates worked. :)

I'm just annoyed because I don't know which thing worked! LOL

Gremlins - they do crap to me all the time at work. You just got lucky and they were in a fix mode instead of "What can I foul up today" mode.

LMAO! I hadn't looked it it that way! And here I thought it was my superior mad troubleshooting skillz.:-D

Awww.....yes, we do! Sometimes we don't fix them the right way, or they don't really need fixing, but we do fix them.;)

Oh, you have to have them to get the gremlins interested. It just depends on their mood as to which way they act.
I usually have to deal with the network sub-species. They are nasty irascible little banshees that usually are preceded by a special call - "John, Have you got a minute?" :cry

LOL I'm glad mine were in a good mood, then!

haha...I hadn't seen that thread, Spock. Its always nice when things work out, but would be even nicer if you knew why!

Ha. I had a problem with windows, and had to use Linux to get it to run chkdsk. Still not sure why it worked, but it did, so I'm happy.

Frequently Laura as sometimes I may try multiple options to fix an issue, which is annoying as hell as more often that not these days I systematically offer advice which is a step by step approach to see what fixes an issue, so I can know what actually fixed it.

Thing with forums is, that many offer good advice so in a thread and in the end you never really know unless the OP tells us what actually fixed the issue, so you tend to review all the advice and see what could have potentially fixed said issue. (kinda like my work in medicine as really no definative answers to some diseases)

Its a gut and previous knowledge type of thing. I think at times no one answer is the right one, it may take a few different options to fix an issue as no one issue is the same as PCs are not uniform.

Happened to me the other day. A printer would not print in one program, but would print in other programs. I Google it, seems to be a driver issue that is common. So, download new drivers, try to install, and the drivers can't find the printer...

So, I delete the old drivers, and poof now it prints. Boss asked how I fixed it, I told him 'hell if I know'. :-D

Yes, but that's usually because I try at least a couple of different fixes before checking to see if the problem is gone. :-D:-D
