    Learning a lot, too! ;)

Thank you for the wonderful work you do here!

    Anyway...

My son's computer wouldn't boot up correctly, showing lines on the screen. Went into safe mode, ran s&d and avast. There were a couple, not many, hits on adware, deleted, and now can start up.

I ran thru your list of things to do thru 6C. Rerunning S&D, there were a few there again, and had it fix them. (sorry, didn't write down which ones)

    Counterspy: nothing

    Bitdefender: nothing

Panda: In safemode, found 6 items, but could not get log because it seems every time in safe mode with networking, I can get on internet ok at the beginning, but after a while, it wouldn't work (using wireless). Went into normal mode and panda found 7 items. (see attached). As you said in posting, they don't provide a way to remove, so how do I?

    Hijackthis: See attached.

I did originally have teatimer running, and the brower kept on changing, that's why I thought there were more serious problems (?). I have since turned teatimer off on your recommendation of being a resource hog.

Thanks in advance for your kind help!

    Kevin

PS I notice on the hijackthis log that there are references to norton. How do I delete all of this since I now have avast running?

They are not fixable since Panda did not give any specific details on where they were found. Normally this just means they are benign left overs that you don't need to worry about.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. There are no signs of Norton.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.7)

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0\

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.
    1. ShowNew
    2. HJT

Are you still having any malware problems?

    chaslang:

    Thanks for the help!

Attached are the logs. Computer seems to be working fine. Just wanted the last bits to go.

"I'm not sure what you are referring to. There are no signs of Norton."

I thought I had seen some references with all the preliminary work I did. Did find "symantec" under application data, and removed it under all users and dave.

I see some references to bitdefender and housecall, both online scans. Should they still be there?

Are there too many programs listed? This is my older (20s) son's computer. Want to make sure there isn't something there I should be deleting to save the anquish, like aim tool bar?

I also see a reference to comcast, which we no longer use.

Thanks again for all the help

    Kevin

Normal but you can delete them if you want. They will just get redownloaded/installed if you ever run the online scans again.

This is not a topic for the malware forum since our focus is malware. However no you don't have to much running? Only you can decide what you use and don't use. Would I use an AIM toolbar....no! I would not use AIM at all, but I'm not you or your son. ;)

If you don't need it, you can uninstall/delete. Any software that you don't use should be uninstalled.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
