I have to replace the hard drive in my compaq p4 1.6,256ram,80g xp home.
I have a system running 98SE with a celeron 533,256,20 gig and would rather lose hd space and gain the speed. My question is can I just hook the 20gigger up to the compaq, get it to 98 and then use the compaq restore disk to put xp on there? Is that enough space for xp to run okay? All help much appreciated.

20 Gig is enough space to run XP. I think it takes around a gig to install it if I remember rightly. If you play games or rip movies etc. you'll run out of space before you know it though.
The other problem you may have, which I've had before, is if your Compaq restore disk has Windows XP OEM on it (Which it probably does, unless you specified retail version).
OEM Windows will only truly work on your original system, and will not update or validate on a different system.
