Hdd Recovery Problems

  1. Hello Geeks,

I am trying to recovery data off a hard drive but when accessing it through a docking station it takes all the computer resources and everything doesn't respond. I had to hard restart my laptop, the first time it didn't turn off when holding down the power button then I did it again and it finally shut down. When restarting it had to do an automatic repair. I also tried to view it in a Desktop but the only one that was available was a XP machine. When in that it didn't even register there was a drive in the machine. I went to CMD and looked through diskpart it showed that there was 150GB part. and a 700GB part., the HDD is 750Gb max and it is partitioned into 150GB and 500GB. I was going to try to access it through a bootable USB with recovery software like Hiren's BootCD but then realized that won't work because it is a external drive and not the primary. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, I have not ran into this problem before so it is new to me.

    Hitachi 759GB 2.5 HDD

P.S. I was not sure if this was a Hardware Forum problem or a Software Forum problem. Feel free to transfer it to the software end if you think it is necessary.

Did you assign a drive letter or letters to the partitions using Disk management?

  3. Like I said I couldn't operate on my own laptop because it took all the resources. CMD wouldn't even respond.

If you have a setup disc for the docking station- that is most likely needed for the XP machine - You can try Mini-tool Partition Wizard to see the external drive, but that will not help in recovering the data. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/minitool_partition_wizard_home_edition.html
If the docking station crashes your laptop, I would try using just a hard drive caddy -If a 2'5" hard drive , I use these sort-as they don't draw much power

There is also the possibility that the hard drive you are trying to recover data has a problem, and using just a caddy, and Mini-tool PartitionWizard would allow you to check and fix it- It has tools to check sectors, and loads more.

  5. So how does Mini-Tools Partition Wizard fix a drive isn't it just a partitioning tool? And when you say caddy you mean an external hard drive enclosure?

Yes, a hard drive enclosure would probably be the correct word..
If you read through the mintool partition wizard , and check what it can do-I use it regularly
