Can anyone please suggest software, preferrably freeware to recover data from an HDD?
Reason - it was written on during a fresh win7 install, and weirdly ended up having the OS on it, which the PC did all by itself!
Am I likey to have any chance, or would it have re-formatted?

    HI Smurph

Yeah there are a few apps that can do the job (some free and some paid) they all have varying success, and to aid with success you will need a 2nd HDD or large USB pen to recover any data too, as recovering to the HDD with recovered data will likely write over potentially recoverable data.

Having said this if you have re-install Windows to that HDD the likelihood of recovering data from a re-installed drive is near impossible unless using data recovery experts and that costs and is not always successful either.

Could try a few like Recuva and Active @ undelete and see how you get on, I dont think you will be sadly successful but worth a go.

Was the data really important and if so do you have backups?

Like david said you need another device to recover to, that being said
Do not use the drives you formatted, the data may still be there, the format just erased the 'index' (if you will). There are plenty of tools, I like using dd rescue from a Linux boot disk. If you go to you tube and search dd rescue you'll see plenty of instructions on how to use it.

You can use multiple programs since they recover to other media the original disk is just read from, so you can try several...

Testdisk will be just fine but you do need another drive on where to copy and save the files that you need to be recovered from the formatted drives.

OK, thanks guys, this HDD didn't have an OS, and I am not using, and am readying space on another drive to store resurrected files.
All i did was pick the incorrect disk for a format in disk management...oops.
Will these e.g. testdisk, recover all in one trawl?
What hapens if i don't have enouigh psace to strore files at present, can I repeat later for the rest?

Foogoo - your 2 last links don't work (for me).

Last two links open fine. I've included code tags so you can copy and paste the urls in case they truncate when you view them.
    Code:
    http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
    Code:
    http://www.r-tt.com/
If they still don't open, try another browser.

TestDisk is a freeware and works best on inaccessible or RAW formatted hard disk drives. You can also try one more tool that specializes in recovering lost, damaged or corrupted partitions. Download it from LINK REMOVED and see if it do the magic.

    Thanks,
    Oliver

Don't do that again. We don't send people to sites with a million crappy downloads and software wrappers added.

I'm still having bother, and will explain my situation more fully.
I stupidly re-formatted my 4TB drive, which was nearly full! ~5.8Tb of all my personal, files over 20 years, including music and movies etc.
Note that a disk scan takes ~10 hours.
The first several failed, due win updates installing…..which I have since disabled!

Anyway, I first tried Testdisk, and couldn't follow it whatsoever...as I found it highly complicated and totally unintuitive.
Next tried Aidfile, and it spat a lot of complicated gobbledygook files, that I couldn’t see recovered files in.
Then Recuva, which I amusing and I has found a large majority of the files, all in arandom order, and of 10TB filesize?!

So, I am looking for further recommendations for the best recovery software that will find my files, and if possible preferably sort in original folders, and not provide results of up to 10TB!

Back to the beginning. If data is written to the hard drive and it writes on the same sector as the files you want to recover, they can't be recovered.

Remo was a spammer. He had one post.

You can try using PhotoRec as it is the GUI version of Testdisk. Or alternatively you could also check GetDataBack and UFS Explorer both are gold standards but are not free though.
