I own a couple of computers all have stock heatsink and fans. My amd 2400 runs at 41c and anotherone a 1800 runs at 56c with thermal pad. Took the pad off cleaned with alcohol but noticed the copper on the stock heatsink is very rough. Applied arctic silver temp droped 3c and I know it will get better. If I lap the heatsink how much will the temps improve..I know these temps seem high, and I think they are out a bit out.

Well I went ahead and lapped a stock amd heatsink. So far I have only lapped with 400 and 600 wet dry, have to find some finer paper yet. The bottom was concave, high on the outside edges and it took a lot of lapping to actually get it flat. Its starting to shine now. I will mount it when I am done to see if the temps actually go down and post here if anyone is interested.

Well general I took the aftermarket evercool heatsink I have im my 1800 and lapped it. It was flatter than the stock one I practiced on. Used 400,600,800,1000 and 2000 wet and dry sandpaper. The finish on the evercool was not as bad as the stock one and maybe the stock one would have made a difference but the temps are the same on the evercool. Maybe it might go down a degree or so on the break in period as I am using as5 thermal grease. Its not a big deal to do just a little elbow grease, I am sure that if I was overclocking that every little bit of cooling advantage would be a asset. I am in the market for a new hs and fan for my 2400 looking at thermaltake products and I will for sure lap it for the little time it takes.......

thanx for the info i think maybe ill give it a try ive got a volcano 9 on a 2400 runs ok at the moment usually around 35-40c with AS3 stock speeds heats up real quick though on a overclock
but if like you say its pretty quick and painless then why not have to look in the shed for my wet and dry now :)
