Hi Kurt and welcome to the forum

Just to get some background as to your issue with your PC, what is the issue you are having?

Is it a software program that will not open or run?
Is it something Java related that will not run and gives you an error message and if so what?

In Windows 7 I would check for Java as being installed in Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program and look down the list of apps for Java and that will tell you if you have it installed and what version it is.

Open a command prompt window (found under Accessories in All Programs) and type the following
    Code:
    java -version
If Java is installed you will see the version; if it is not you will see " 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command".

I only have one computer (XP) with Java installed and for awhile, every time I updated it, the Control Panel icon disappeared. So the lack of an icon might not mean that there is no Java. The message after the code above will tell you if it is installed or not.

My advice: if you don't need Java, do not install it. Lots of malware enters a computer through old versions of Java.
