Hi, Everyone! I'm a new member and as a matter of fact I just signed up a few minutes ago. I've always wanted to be a part of this forum so I finally decided to sign up.

I also need help on my PC and I know that this is the best place to find great answers and solutions.

    Here's my problem:

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 x64-bit Edition and I couldn't install and run some programs and anti-viruses because they required SP2 to be installed. So I downloaded and installed SP2 x64-bit from microsoft and I was able to install new programs that I have already saved in my hard disk.

The problem arose when I had to install Office 2010 and other programs from a DVD and my PC cannot detect, open, recognize and use my DVD drive/writer!

I tried using Windows Repair, XP Quick Fix, etc. but still my DVD drive won't work! So I uninstalled SP2 and still my DVD drive won't open.

I finally got the DVD functioning again after I did a system restore. I'm not sure what else went haywire after the SP2 installation because I was preoccupied fixing my DVD drive.

I'd like to install SP2 again so I can put much needed programs in my Windows XP x64bit like antiviruses and Office 2010 but I'm worried that it would disable my DVD drive again.

Any suggestions on how to fix my DVD drive if it malfunctions again after I reinstall SP2 without uninstalling SP2 and doing another system restore?

Thanks, guys. I'd appreciate any help from all of you...:confused

    Hi

Was the issue with DVD/CDs with autorun or can via "My Computer" can you open the devices? as in does your DVD drive show in My Computer?

If not then we may need to know your PC make and model or motherboard make and model as we would need to install the Chipset driver again for the said model.

So in Device Manager do you have any devices with a yellow ! mark by then and if so what?

So I would if your PC and DVD is working OK now, re-install SP2 and check device manager for yellow ! marks and even if you see none install the Chipset driver for your model PC/Motherboard and we can advise you on what Chipset to install if you follow the below guide.

    David GP,

Since the person is running XP, they'd have a yellow "?" rather than an "!". Also, once they've posted the Speccy report text file as an attachment, they may simply need to flash the firmware for their DVD drive to the latest version. That's what I had to do on my laptop.
