It's been awhile since that last time I have been here. I have had a lot of projects going on.

    This is my latest.

The Linux forum was eliminated and amalgamated into another forum. I'm having difficulty finding any of our past Linux posts.

    Hi Sgt. Tibbs,

I'd like so much to thank whoever made that decision to combine all of the different operating systems into one software thread, a while back.

This was a terrific decision all around and for all involved in my opinion. For example, I'd never previously had any interest in Linux at all; until I saw a few threads asking questions about it right around the time when all software threads were combined. As I am primarily interested in freeware; the Linux operating system is practically Nirvana - especially in comparison to Apple as well as when compared to Windows OS. The Apple operating systems are great but they're proprietary and cannot be installed on anything but their own brand of computers. And they cost far more (up front) than all the other Windows brands and you have to but them from Apple. But on the plus side they seem to last much longer, fall apart less and seem to require less maintenance. But with windows you are not buying the software, you are actually leasing it, because of Microsoft's planned obsolescence policies.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's good to have all the software info in one place. Thanks again! ;)

P.S. Here is a picture of my Computer Control Room - (Just Kidding!) - lol

    Good Luck - COMP

I'm a regular member just like you, so it certainly had nothing to do with me. I'm betting it was Tim and Jim and maybe some of the other powers that be who decided to combine forums. However, I would like to point out that they are definitely not combined all into one thread, but rather all the threads are combined into one forum. ;)

Oh yeah, that would be extremely tedious as well as somewhat confusing, having ALL of the various threads on one single webpage, lol. What I actually meant to say was thanks to Tim or whoever combining the Section Titles by condensing and making one "section" of the main page's thread topics combining to make it simply ALL software. Whoever decided to combine the software main categories/topics made a good decision. There are many forum members in here who have excellent searching skills who might be able to help someone else who has a problem - even though the 'helper' never actually had actually experienced that problem themselves or even used Apple, Linux or whatever OS comes along down the line..

    Good Luck - COMP

I understand and respect the decision of the admin team to put all Linux related threads into the software forum. I did like having a separate forum for Linux/Unix topics. I considered the separate forum to be a value added feature of MG. I am okay with the change. Just my two cents worth. :)

To bad there wasn't a way to have the Linux questions or problems posted in the software forum as well as another topic link on the main "Major Geeks Support Forums" webpage.

Sort of a dual-link deal, meaning whenever you post in either topic's main page, it then appears in both. That way the Linux-only folks could post back-and-fourth without having to go through all of the software posts. And the current software folks could also benefit from learning about Linux too. The best of both worlds. I don't know if that is technically possible but maybe the Major could chime in here on this one? (just an idea)

This site requires some ads to survive and Linux was not bringing in the results desired.

Also, not as much movement in many of the Software areas and merger found overall better results.

Have you posted a request for help in software? some of the Linux geeks still review the help threads on a regular basis.

I would like to talk about Linux. I put a windows cd in of Farm Frenzy and I thought the "play games on Linux" program would make it work but I can't even find it. (The cd that is) Every thing I look up says everything is "unknown" under properties.:confused

You need to ask for Software Support in the proper area.

The amount of Linux posts was so small, as well as some other forums, we decided to merge everything into software and hardware with computers and mobile as the main 2 sections. Honestly, a few of the forums here, including Linux and Folding for example, had such little activity that they didn't warrant their own forums. It's less to go through and easier for those who come here looking for help.

The market is shifting and we are looking to improve service here. Frankly, there is no need, nor room, for dozens of forums.

Let me address this. The forums have never made money. O.K, that's not entirely true, they make some money but that money is given to the malware guys and whatever is left goes in a Christmas bonus to the volunteers. In other words, nothing is left for Jim and Tim. This year will be a little light as ads are down across the board everywhere. Very few sites work like we do, trying to keep ads down and provide good service but onwards we go.
