Does it annoy you when you answer someone's question in the forums and they ignore your help? Case in point guy having hard drive trouble, I say try this & this... next post of his "Well I did this & this and it is not working" but none of what he did is what I said to do. Do I bother to reply since he is ignoring my advice? Had too many of these lately, post a link to a fix for someone and they say "that is the same fix I tried" no it was not it is totally different from anything they said they tried - they looked at the site and assumed they'd done it, so they never tried it.

    'Morning, foogoo

Yes, but not as much as it used to - I just add that poster to my ignore list. ;)

Not really as its not worth getting bothered by it.

Only if you intend to continue helping, otherwise I'd say no...move on to the next person who is interested in your help. :)

You might want to try posting the fix within your post rather than linking people. I think a lot of people are adverse to going to random websites for help or downloads. I know I am and will often choose not to click on it and go with advice from people who are instructing me directly on here. There is a reason they come to MGs for help rather than just doing a search online and clicking everywhere. Just my honest opinion.

    Hi foogoo,

I saw your post and know what you mean. Sometimes it seems like the member is not even reading our help. And then there are those members not reporting back - at least tell us if the advice given has solved the problem (I don't want a pat on the back rolleyes); that's of benefit to all members and guests, and more importantly, the Support Forums.

If ALL the help given on MajorGeeks Support Forums had a monetary value ($10 per problem solved), it would run into Millions of Dollars. And no, I'm not exaggerating - look at the number of threads and posts; and most problems are solved.

    Slightly off topic...
dr.moriarty, what exactly does it mean when a member is added to the ignore list? Would I see no posts from that member?

BTW While almost all members seeking help are gratefull, I recall 2 I will not help... but I probably will :confused

    Hello, Eldon

I was speaking of my personal list of those who have repeatedly shown that I shouldn't have spent time trying to help them.

*Time limit for edit expired, Eldon.
Exactly, until you remove that member from your CP setting's ignore list.

This. I rarely need help with anything, but when I do I've already done my own search for a solution. Honestly, when someone posts a link, most of the time I assume they've done the same so I don't bother clicking. Long ago on another site I clicked on a link someone posted in a help forum and ended up with a virus that eventually led to me having to reformat. I realize the odds are that isn't what would happen here, but once bitten, twice shy.

That said, it's very rude not to respond if someone has helped you whether what they suggested works or not. I'm more than happy to say I don't click on external links, but thank them for trying.

    Thanks dr.moriarty.

    I often wondered about that.

Depending on how they've got it set up here, you may not be able to ignore members as a moderator. And while the posts are hidden if they're by members you've added to your ignore list, their name and the fact that they've posted still shows up, and each post has an option to view it.

    You're welcome.

*And "repeatedly shown" is the correct phrase I needed in post#5.

Just like you can hide signatures, you as a Mod can do the same with a member's post, Eldon.

As the saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."
Though I must admit, I have rescued a few drunk horses, the others I leave to roam aimlessly in their upstairs paddock.

Sometimes they found an answer (asked on numerous forums), gave up and replaced the computer, took it to a shop etc so it's not uncommon. Remember this: Just because they didn't come back hundreds, maybe thousands will find it in Google and it might just help them. There's a ton of value to answering a question right there.

Our emails are not sending out again so the person might have gotten a notification from other forums but never got one from here and does not know.

Even if the original poster does not reply back to your advice it will probably help someone else because lots of people search MG for a solution before they start a new thread, or at least they should.;)
So keep on doing what you do. The information given here is valuable and useful:)

As far as posting links, I do that if I have actually used that info and if it is presented is such a way my retelling could not do it justice (they have screenshots, step by step, etc.)

IDK, I just had a bad day with back to back posts. But I do work with a guy with the same affliction, he'll ask for my help & totally ignore it... frustrating.

Yeah, it's frustrating, but as everyone said it's about helping others as well, so while the OP doesn't follow, someone else may. :)

I agree with Tim (MA) and they have asked on multiple forums and we cannot know what advice they have taken, but in some instances you find folk ask a question and do not like the answers as they seem to know better, BUT why ask the question in the first place?

TBH if you answer a question and get no reply the question and answer is out there for all to see and never know who it may help other than the OP, so still worth replying to questions knowing you may never get a reply to if it worked or not.

Very true . . . though in this case it should be "You can lead a mind to knowledge, but you can't make it think." :-D

It doesn't bother me when something like that happens, and I don't give it much thought. Plus, like the Major and DavidGP said, someone else searching for answers may stumble on that thread and be helped with the information there. It's all good.
