    Hi there. I was getting blue screen of death "stop" messages due to one of my drivers not working correctly. I hadn't installed any new hardware, but while I was searching for some info on the stop messages I was getting, it looks like I ended up getting this help assistant rogue virus thing. It keeps setting up a user called "help assistant" in my document and settings folder.

    I was able to get through all the Read Me steps, but I wasn't able to get the Root Repeal log - the exe stalled at the initializing stage, and I had to reboot. I did get the logs from Super AntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, Combofix, and the MGTools file, and I'm attaching them here. Hope you guys can help me out!

    I am not seeing evidence that usually would correspond to an MBR infection. This may be a new form.

    What is this: C:\ok

    Let's try this:

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Reboot and go into the bios and change your boot up order to cd drive first. Reboot to your xp cd. Go into the Recovery console, and once there type:
    fixmbr

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    Then boot back into normal mode.

    First let's try ComboFix.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\TEMP\E.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator.MICHAEL-19\Local Settings\Application Data\xkkprh

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator.MICHAEL-19\Local Settings\Application Data\xkkprh

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\orentiksvbqmirp]
    "imagepath"=-

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi, many thanks for responding.

    C:\ok is a folder I created to put in the stuff from MG I downloaded, as well as a couple of things (text files/pictures/mp3s) I had on the desktop.

    I wasn't able to load the recovery console from the CD - my main CD-rom is an external usb drive, and for some reason it doesn't show up in my F2 setup. However, I was able to install recovery console as a startup option. I hit F8 upon startup to get to the advanced options menu and clicked on "Return to OS choices" and then clicked on Recovery Console.

    I ran combofix without a problem - it also updated to a new version.

    It doesn't seem like anything has changed so far - Help Assistant is still located in C:/documents & settings, and my explorer bar still looks generic gray instead of the colorful xp one.

    I've attached my logs. I hope you can help.

    Humm.....let's try this:

    Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
    Close out all other open programs and windows.
    Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
    If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
    Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    helpasst -mbrt

    Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
    When it completes, a log will open.
    Please post the contents of that log.

    *In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    mbr -f

    Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
    Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
    Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    helpasst -mbrt

    Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
    When it completes, a log will open.
    Please post the contents of that log.

    **Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

    Here is the log. The exe didn't pick up a MBR infection, but it did say it removed the Help Assistant folder, which looks to have happened when I now go into my computer/explorer. I hope this helps.

    Good to know. Tell me what issues you still have and run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    It looks like things are back to normal. Should I keep the "C:\HelpAsst_backup" folder in my root drive? Here is the log.

    Good to know. You can delete both of these:
    C:\HelpAsst.log
    C:\HelpAsst_backup

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
