Hi, First post. I've had problems with my pc and using techspot guide used a combination of HJK, vundofix, vurtomondo, combofix etc to resolve problems. I've got Spybot, Avast and AVG on my PC.
The problem i've got at the moment is that i can't get on the net, windows media won't play anything (message "sound device not installed or something"), Most cds won't play either by autorun or by manually clicking on cd icon in my computer and Avast won't run when computer starts or manually after. I've spent 5 days getting to this point with guy at techspot and am seriusly thinking of a clean re-install. My only worry is reinstalling files or folders that may be currupted. Also if i go ahead with this which antivirus/ malware/ spyware free softwares should i have on my pc at one time?

Hi, Yeah sure. I have deleted a few of the programs that were on your list. Tried to delete the java updates but i keep getting message "Te windows installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if Windows installer is not correctly installed".
What can or should i do?

Checked windows installer in services and in properties it says the service status is stopped. When i try to start it, message comes up Error 1084 This service can not be started in safe mode.

Also checked System Configuration Utility, most services have been stopped.

Then if you can....try running them in normal mode ....see how far you can get...(if installed in normal mode, they will run in safe mode.)

I am in normal mode. But when i try to install, delete or run some programs, the message comes up to say that it can't be done in safe mode.

I decided to go into start up and selected "last known working windows". Desktop now looks normal and windows media is working again. haven't checked or followed your instrustions further.

From there I would run the MGTools and attach the log ...make sure there isn't anything that could be the beginning of the cause to the problems.

Hi, please find MGlogs.zip attached. Note didn't run any other scan before this. Also while scanning message kept poping up relating to Avast (Alwil software) and that process was being used by other.

Yes...Avast can do that..which is why we ask you to disable it when you run the scans.

    There are things to fix:
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Hi, managed to do all of that (though had to use windows installer to remove the java programs u listed). Even though i've removed Avast it 's still on my computer(showing up under services (in system info). Can't find away to get rid. Still ran mgtool and avenger (find logs attached).
At moment i've got AVG antispyware, spybot and windows firewall running usually. What freeware should i have running on my pc? And which others should i have for maintainance use?
Also don't know when or if you'd want to look; i think i have unnecessary start ups and backgroung processes. Could you check them out?

Your logs look clean ....you can go to start / run / type "services.msc" without quotes and then scroll down to the avast service ..right click and choose properties ..from there you can stop the service ...if you want to delete the service, tell me exactly what it is named.

Hi, for some reason avast isn't listed anymore in services or running tasks (maybe it's been removed?).
Any how, so you think i don't need to scan any further?
Which freeware would you recommend i keep/install to keep pc "safe"?
I've attached a lists services could you please have a look to see if anything can be remove or it's state changed?
Also same for running tasks, if anything shouldn't/needn't be there or running?

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate.

P.S. Sorry services file is such a mess.

I would suggest that you ask those questions in the software section ....You will get good advice as to anti-virus and spyware programs as well as startup managers.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the cf and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
