    Hello to everyone!
This is my first post on here, so please, be kind:)

I am (still  ) running Win 98 and I just recently upgraded my BIOS to Award 6.0 Everything's been functioning great until I try to hook up my new (bought it tonight) dig. camera. I plug the USB cable into the back of comp. and other end into cam. (software installed already) and restart comp. Nothing. I check Device Manager and there aren't any USB ports listed, just COM's 1&2 and LPT 1. Tried to refresh ports, but USB was not added. Also, BIOS was not enabled for PNP compatable OS. I figured, first things first, and when I went in and changed the BIOS setting for PNP's to yes from no and saved and exited, when 98 loaded, the screen was all psychodelic-colored. Pressed-on and tried to refresh the ports in device manager and still nothing. Restarted and went back to 'no' for PNP and screen went back to normal color. Anyone able to help me out with either or both problems? I would be ETERNALLY GREATFUL!

OK, I refuse to let my feelings be hurt b/c no one is jumping in here. (sniff-sniff). I got the colors to go away by restarting a couple of times in a row. Now I just need to convince my comp. that there really are USB ports connected to the mother board. I've tried everything I know, sombody, PLEASE!!!

Are the USB ports enabled in the BIOS?

  4. 7199_RPM

Yes, I got it changed to 'yes' in the 'PNP OS Installed' field.

In the BIOS, look for "integrated" and then something saying USB Ports. I'm not sure what yours will say. Make sure its set as on because it sounds as if they are disabled.

Why did you so the BIOS update in the first place?

OK, I found that one and got it enabled. That was in the IDE controllers section of the BIOS right above the PNP section. Silly thing still won't acknowlege that it has USBs. Maybe I am not doing the right things??? It should find 'em just by opening Device Manager and refreshing the ports entry on the tree shouldn't it?

I originally upgraded the BIOS b/c my orig. one (4.5 I believe) didn't support HDDs larger than 33.8 gigs and I purchased a 40 gig for multi-media storage before I knew this. Upgraded the BIOS and got my 40 in, and all was well in the universe until I needed the USBs.

If they are not in Device Manager then they are disable or not working properly. If I had to guess the update disabled them.

If you are familiar with hardware related items, take off the side of the computer and remove the CMOS battery for 30 seconds. Replace the battery and boot up, you may get a few beeps but just press F1 to continue on or it may ask you to set defaults, if so do this.

Doing the above will reset the default settings for the BIOS. If this doesnt work then you will need to browse around the BIOS for the USB settings. It should be somewhere around "Intergrated Devices" or something similiar. Every BIOS is somewhat similiar but has different layouts.

OK, will try that next. When I got the comp. new, I had the shop that built it inst. a scanner for me, it was on a USB and all was well. Did a format C about a year and a half later and got it back up again and lost my USBs. Stowed the scanner and just lived with it. Just did another format C about 2 years after the first format, and again, no USBs. I figured it would detect them when I restarted with the camera hooked up, but I guess figuring and ASSuming are too closely related. On a side note, I see you hunt and fish, every do any turkey hunting?

In "Device Manager" do you have Universal Serial Bus Controllers ??

  11. 7199_RPM

    7199_RPM Private E-2

It has listed as follows in a decending tree:
    Computer,CD ROM,Disk Drives,Display Adapters,Floppy Disk Controllers,Hard Disk Controllers,Keyboard,Monitors,Mouse,Network Adapters,Other Devices,Ports (com and lpt),Sound-Video-and Game Controllers,System Devices.

In the System Devices, there is an entry for Plug N Play Bios and System Board Extension for PnP Bios.

    Do you have yahoo messenger?

Go back into Device Manager and next to "Other Devices" click the + and tell me what it says in here!

    No I dont

The only thing in Other Devices is 'PCI Communication Device' - aka my dial-up modem that I uninstalled the software for when I switched to DSL.

What I need you to do is, browser thru the BIOS and look for the following and make sure they are set as stated below...

    • USB Keyboard - DOS or Enabled (Even if you have NO USB Keyboard)
    • Legacy USB Support - Enabled
    • Assign IRQ for USB - Enabled (Some combinations of OS and BIOS version require this setting to be Disabled).
What BIOS manufacturer do you have? What is the date on the BIOS version you have now?

dang it all to heck!@!!! I had this all typed and it logged me out when I tried to submit it. OK, once again, it says its "Award BIOS type" is a Pheonix-Award bios - v6.00PG - date is 05-19-04. It WAS v4.3 - it says the "Award BIOS message is Release 4.3 still though. Let me jot all that down and I will go back to BIOS and make sure its set up like that. THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me. If you need to get some shut-eye, I totally understand, but if you can hang-out and help me some more, that would be awsome! BRB

OK, it worked. That is why I was gone so long. I never found any menus with 'Legacy' in them, found one that was "Assign IRQ for VGA" but not for USB. However, I assigned USB support for keyboard (and mouse while I was at it - freakin mouse locked up and had to go and un-do it) and I guess that did the trick! Saved and exited BIOS setup and just for sh!ts and giggles, flicked on the camera when it was loading Windows, and BAM! - "new hardware found" and "installing software for blah blah blah. Long story short, I successfully imported pics from my camera. Thank You A Million!!! While I was poking around in the BIOS, I found an adjustment in Advanced BIOS Features Set-Up that was "OS Select for DRAM >64 MB" - it is set to <64. I have 192MB of RAM, should it be set to OS/2 to utilize the RAM or no? I swear, that is my last question for the evening. ;)

    OS Select for DRAM >64MB:
    • Non-OS/2: If your operating system is not OS/2, please select this item.
    • OS/2: If system DRAM is more than 64MB and operating system is OS/2, please select this item.
    • Non-OS/2: Default and best choice.
If you use OS/2 operating system, you must enable this option to access more than 64 MB RAM memory. As most users use Windows 0x, disable this function, or set it as "Non-OS/2").

I like default. Its usually the best choice (if it aint broke, dont fix it). Got ya. Hey man, seriously, thanks a Million.

So we don't drag this thread out any further, e-mail me sometime and we'll talk some hunting and outdoors stuff. I have 'receive e-mail from members' enabled in my profile. I think I will crop and resize those photos (they are of my rifles, actually) and send 'em on to the buddy of mine. I'll hang out a few more mins. if you wanna jot me something back and then I'm gonna hit the rack when I'm done with the pics.

    Your Welcome!:)

I'm about to finish my last cup of coffee and I'm headed to my shooting house. It's 30' F here right now, going to be a good morning I think, it's been 70-80 F the past few days here. It's about time we get some colder tempratures. Middle of Jan. and we had a tornado yesterday that killed a woman, all of this in the Winter, doesnt make sense.

Yep, this is the wierdest Jan. I've ever seen. Usually here you can count on at least teens in the AM if not -0s this time of year. It was prob. 50-60 here today. We took our daughter and a couple of her friends to go ice skating today (indoor rink), and it was colder in there than it was outside! Gonna be up to our ears in ticks this Spring if it doesn't do some coolin' off. Anyhow, I'll let you go. Take it easy.
