Hi there, new on here and hoping you can help, thanks in advance. Thought pc was having some hardware issue as couple of weeks ago it blue screened and on sending report to microsoft came up some hardware and software issue, there was a funny mouse error with drop down boxes flashing when tried to click on, changed mouse, keyboard updated java etc and it seemed to be ok BUT yesterday blue screened twice and on sending error report microsoft came back with it appeared infected with spooldr.sys and advised it's on line one scan, which found nothing. I run malwarebytes regularly, avast is my anitvirus, ZA firewall, regular superantispyware, use spywareblaster, hosts.
Nothing seems to be coming up malwarebytes, superanti, avast but on running rootrepeal the computer crashes every time, 40 or so minutes into but MBR rootkill detected on external hard drive, that crash doesn't ble screen it just restarts and error is: C:\Docum\User1\Locals-1\Temp\Wer4184.dir00\Mini030911-04.dmp and C:\Docum\User1\Locals-1\Temp\Wer4184.dir00\sysdata.xml

Rootrepel did not have a log with pc crashing 6 times of trying :( not sure if another way to try and run it? I followed all the directions.

Thank you again for any advice

    Uninstall the below outdated Java.
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 20
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 23

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8A4A36C2-0535-4D2C-BD3D-496CB7EED6E3} - (no file)
    • O16 - DPF: {0E5F0222-96B9-11D3-8997-00104BD12D94} -
    • O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0017-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_17) -
    • O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0018-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_18) -
    • O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0021-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_21) -
    • O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0024-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
    • O23 - Service: ZDUTXZXZLT - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\USER1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZDUTXZXZLT.exe (file missing)
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Delete these unless you know what they are/need them:

    • C:\pcv210.tmp
    • C:\pcv215.tmp
    • C:\pcv4E1.tmp
    • C:\pcv4E4.tmp
    • C:\pcv4E9.tmp
    • C:\pcv4F1.tmp
    • C:\pcv55.tmp
    • C:\pcvE2.tmp

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    ZDUTXZXZLT
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{8A4A36C2-0535-4D2C-BD3D-496CB7EED6E3}]
    File::
    c:\docume~1\USER1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZDUTXZXZLT.exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    * Java(TM) 6 Update 23-comes up "the installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it"
Is there a good tool for getting old java off, had quick look and couldn't find anything. Thanks again :)

If we could just forget about the Java step for now and continue on. :)

All successfully completed bar java, did try the final reboot and install up to date java but got error again and came up 'error 1714. The older version of java(TM)6 update 24 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group'

How is it looking? Is it/was it virused or is java issue? Thank you VERY much for help.

PS also noticed you play backgammon, have you come across zooescape.com, I'm addicted to backgammon there, turn based cool site :)

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

Many thanks TimW and Kestrel13 :) relieved to hear all clear, was it the spooldr.sys virus? Also any suggestions to sort out the java uninstall/install issue? Reading keeping protected, I did have subscribed superantispyware until last month but thought it was a longer sub and have not resubbed, I'm gathering I need something like it to be safest.

Thank you again for fast and helpful responses

PS Kestrel13 I'm capricorn17 on zooescape.com if you fancy beating me at backgammon ;)
