I have this SMVERI32 trojan that I can't seem to get rid of. Ad-Aware says my system is clean and so does SpyBot S&D. I've posted my HJT log. I've tried to fix it was a generic ComboFix CFScript.txt that I found on google searching for "smveri32" and replacing the .dll file w/ the one that this trojan refers to (mine is named npkpzah.dll), but still no luck. I can't delete this damn thing. Please help.

Edit by chaslang: Inline logs attached for reference purposes

    any help is much appreciated.

    thank you,

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Steps followed

Chaslang. I've followed the Run & Read Me First instructions and have attached the requested logs below. the npkpzah.dll still shows up in my HJT log but continues to elude the other spyware programs. I was not able to complete the MGTools because to the missing .NET framework. I've attached the .zip file anyways. The problem only seems to be slowing down my gaming, which I only noticed yesterday. Did not go to any new/abarent websites. Just noticed I was lagging in WC3. Please help. Thank you.

    Second Set of Logs

Also, somewhere in this process I've managed to delete the icon to the "My Computer" as it appears on the Start Menu. It is now a generic icon. Can you please show me how to recover it back?

    thanks.

    Re: Second Set of Logs

Let's see where this stands after removing malware.

What are you loading with AutoHotkey at startup?
    O4 - Startup: My_AutoWarkey_Script.lnk = D:\Warkeys\AutoWarkey\AutoHotkey\AutoHotkey.exe

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C100A6FF-F3D4-444C-BBE5-6EA17D99BB07} - c:\windows\system32\npkpzah.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, please run MSconfig and put your PC into Normal Startup mode as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN Me.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    THANK YOU, Chaslang. Problem fixed!

The AutoWarkeys is a program that I run on top of Warcraft 3 (Blizzard RTS) to bind keys and see health bars. Went through the steps and it all worked! that nasty smveri32 trojan is gone, and that annoying npkpzah.dll also gone. Thanks for all the help. Fixing people should be this straighforward. Attached are the requested files.

    Thanks again! :celebrate

    One last thing...

In the process of running ComboFix (the first time) it somehow deleted the "My Computer" Icon from the Start Menue. I've tried a couple of things I read on the web, but no help:

    disabling/re-enabling under Start Menu properties
    deleteting Autorun.inf
downloading a Windows program called Tweak-ui
    looking in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ DriveIcons \ <drive>
to try and delete the <drive> key
    except, I don't have a " \DriveIcons\ " directory there.

still can't seem to get it back.

Please help. Not crucial, but would be nice to get it back. I've attached a .jpg file to show what I'm talking about.

    Thanks,
    rtcmd

    Re: One last thing...

I'm not sure if the below will fix it or not, but give it a try. If it does not work, I suggest posting a question in the Software Forum. Is the icon also incorrect for My Computer on your Desktop.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as IEFLL-Fix.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    9. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
