Help - Can't uninstall Microsoft Nvidia driver

Currently running XP SP1 - video driver is NVIDIA Microsoft 2.9.5.8

When I try to uninstall the driver and then install a new Nvidia driver I get a message that there is an incorrect parameter just before the install ends. I've tried reinstalling windows, tried various Nvidia drivers, used drive cleaner, drive manager...all to no avail. I believe that there's something either in the registry or in Windows File Protection causing this. Anybody have this experience or know how to resolve it (without having to wipe the drive?)

    Thanks,
    Steve

Have you tried installing the NVidia driver on top of the MS NV driver?

Yes - both manually and with the wizard. Still no go. It gives an invalid parameter error in the wizard. Manually it just keeps reverting back.

okay, do you have any antivirus programs running? if so, turn them off.

Did that too - I've tried everything including deleting files from dll cache, etc. All to no avail. I'm perplexed about the invalid parameter message I get just before the HW wizard installing the nvidia drivers ends. It's got to be reading something from the registry - I just can't figure out what yet.

Don't the nVidia Driver Detonators help with this pesky problem?

Tried NFS and all of the 'detonator' type software - all to no avail. Guess Nvidia support is the next step...thanks for the replies.

This might be worth a try,, Try setting your display driver to VGA, or SVGA. The native windows drivers. If you can get it to do that, you might be able to install the new Nvidia drivers after you reboot.

    Hi Nick -

Thanks for the reply - but I already tried that.....still get the parameter error when trying to reinstall. Guess I'll live with what I've got until I wipe this drive clean.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Try deleting the video card from Device Manager, and then rebooting. You should be given the opportunity to pick from a list of drivers during the "Add New Hardware" wizard do-dad on reboot.

Alternately, you can specify "C:\NVIDIA\WinXP-2K\45.23" as a location to search. NVidia drivers always create a cache like this.

    Tried that one also -
Finally gave up and did a reinstall of XP - that did the trick. I'll never download an Nvidia driver from MS updates again. That was the cause of the problem in the first place.

what you need is Nast File Remover from the main download page

Run it a few times works a treat

Does it say "Invalid data" or something when you try to reinstall?

If so.... this may solve your problem (I had hell trying to install my Catalyst drivers after installing my Radeon 9800 Pro)... it wouldn't let me install until I fixed this problem which had a flaw in the installation of the Detenator Drivers:

After fixing the problem... I was able to install drivers again.
