I followed steps 1-6, except Windows Defender and Counter Spy. I could not install them. Below is the logfile from Hijackthis. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my computer is very sluggish and freezes often.

It started when Norton Antivirus died. I received an error message that the program was corrupted and have not been able to restore it since. A few processes seem to be running. I am basically confused and stumped.

    It's a Sony Vaio, K PCG-K23.

    CPU ?

Edit: Removed inline HJT log for guide to be actioned

    Thank you!

    Hi and Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please re-run the guide again as the location you had Hijackthis installed in and named is not in the guide... the guide has changed in the past week and as some other scans to run, to help remove any malware you have... please do follow the guide closely and good luck.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Thanks Halo. But I am unable to run two of the necessary spyware removal programs: CounterSpy and Windows Defender. I am able to download the .exe files but cannot install them. The error message tells me the installer doesn't work. Do you know why this would happen?

    Thanks again for your help.

It could be an MS Windows Installer issue or it could be due to malware. Just complete the rest of the instructions. Make sure to install & rename HijackThis.exe exactly as requested to avoid any further delay in getting help. Also attach all the other requested logs.
