I have cable internet. No pc is directly hooked up. We run 2 laptops and an xBox wirelessly. Same setup for a year has worked fine. Suddenly in just the past week we are experiencing slow connections and frequent disconnects.

When we disconnect, all of us disconnect. But either of us laptop users can get us all back on line by using the Windows "Troubleshoot Problems" automated process thing. It resets a gateway or something, then we're back. Still gawd-awful slow, but back.

How can I determine if this is a local problem, or if my cable company needs a call?

It's the cable or related. If you have one computer that won't connect then fine, but numerous? Nope.

Well, first thing the cable company will do is say to pull the plug for 5 minutes and plug it back in, so you might as well try that.

Next, is a possible wireless signal conflict. Find out how to log into your router (Google should find that for you) and if you can find your wireless settings in the router, change the channel to 1, 6 or 11. I like 11. BUT, using http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/inssider.html you can see what channel is best easily.

No luck? Call the cable company. They can check your signal, send a reset or last send a tech out.

Is your modem and router integrated into the same device or separate? I agree the first thing you need to do is reset your network as MA suggested. Unplug the modem, and the router and all connected devices (if connected via Ethernet). Then plug in the modem, wait for lights to settle down, then the router and wait for the lights to settle, then your computers.

I would try connecting one computer via Ethernet and see if it can get out.

Again, if using a separate router, you might try connecting a computer directly to the modem and see what happens. The router may be bad.
