Glad it connected to the internet right away. Your Win 10 should now be activated as well. You can go to Settings -> Update and security -> Activation to check. Also, you'll be back to version 1607.

Hmm, doesn't show the version. I first look at your path through "settings", then looked at "system" info as well to see if it was listed on there.

Maybe it's the "latest" but don't know how to find out for sure??

I seem to have lost the ability/option to turn off my touch-pad. I prefer using a mouse, and if I don't turn off the touch-pad it is annoying because I can't help but touch it with my palms.

Does anyone know how to fix this in Windows 10 Home. When I did the free upgrade the touchpad didn't come back on, but I see the options are different with this new install (that I can't figure out which version I have).

  9. outdoorgal

    outdoorgal Sergeant Major

Ok, I checked updates and now it's listing version 1607. That's the latest I think, the one I had tried at one time, and had some issues with. I'll try it again now though since I have the new hdd. It's updating now;)

As far as your touchpad, you're going to have to go to the Toshiba Support site and download the Touchpad driver/Control Panel software.

Once installed, open Control Panel -> Mouse and change settings there.

For version & build, go to Settings -> System -> About

That's right, I remember someone saying something about "drivers" might be needed.

That version info is missing from the "about" area mdonah. Unless I'm blind, it isn't there. I think I put a pick of the area. Let me upload it here though;)

No, that tab is missing in my Win 10. Here's some snips. I'll go look for the driver, I think that needs to be added as @mdonah wrote;)

Oh Geez, now if I type in the Serial # for my Toshiba, which came with Win 7 Home Prem., I get another dropdown that asks me to put in which OS. And the list doesn't have Win 10 in it at all for drivers, arg:cool:

Most Windows 7 drivers will work in Windows 10- if any not you can use compatibility mode . Download w7 drivers from Toshiba site, if you need any, before trying to update with Windows 10 offered updates

Ok, I can try with the Win 7. When I upgraded to Win 10 before, I believe I still had that same tab on there with the "red" for the touchpad. I'll give it a go. I have to ask though, wouldn't the drivers for 10 actually work better, or maybe they sort of use old parts if they are still compatible. I imagine every manufacturer does that, only upgrade certain things. Ok, I'll go give it a go now, thank you much @baklogic

If you read around, you will notice that Windows 10 can be brilliant for drivers, BUT, not always perfect- always try the manufacturers drivers first .

I downloaded the Win 7 and it works fine @baklogic Many thanks to you and @mdonah

I saw I now have the little, red, tab back, and I simply disabled it, and just using my mouse;) One thing I like is if I want to use the touch for any reason, I can, but I am and "stuck on my mouse" kinda gal;) Thanks again;)

That makes sense to use the Toshiba drivers first. Seems this one will probably do fine;) So others do make drivers, like "generic" drivers I would imagine. I know "generic" brands of foods and things like that, but some things won't fly, gotta have the name brand:)

The thing is, you have an AMD CPU/APU in your Toshiba like I have in my Dell Inspiron. I've found that Windows does better with Device drivers on Intel based systems but, that Touchpad driver needed to be downloaded from Toshiba. You may also find that some other drivers will need to be downloaded from Toshiba too.

I'm not surprised that Toshiba didn't offer Win 10 drivers. They didn't test your model with Win 10 during manufacture.

I don't know that they don't have Win 10 Drivers, I just couldn't get to them when I typed in the Serial number of my Toshiba. Although there was a full list of OS under that Serial #. If someone has a Toshiba that was bought "with" Win10 on it, maybe the Win 10 OS will popup up??

I believe you said your Toshiba was made in 2011 like my Dell Latitude was. Dell doesn't have Win 10 drivers for my Latitude either but I'm running Win 10 on it. I used IOBit's Driver Booster to get drivers I was missing (and to update some others).

  25. outdoorgal

    outdoorgal Sergeant Major

Yes, I bought it about Sept. 2011. Well, I will keep you in mind if something else comes up that I need a driver for;) and can't find one for Win 10;) Do you think I should stick with the Win 7 one? I mean, I haven't a clue about what a driver really even is. I didn't even know I needed one for that touchpad.

  26. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

Stick with the Win 7 drivers supplied by Toshiba.

A Device driver is software that enables the Operating System to interact with the device. Without the driver, the Operating System doesn't "know" what the device is or how to use it.

    Hi @baklogic,

I need to retrieve a couple of movies I had saved on my old HDD. I need to buy a Caddy to hold it right? What about something to connect it to my laptop so I can upload from it? Not sure what to get. Here is what I found through walmart (I know it's cheap but it's what I can afford):

    https://www.amazon.com/Generic-Drive-Toshiba-Satellite-P50-a01d/dp/B00HU5FV34

I can't find one, so far, that is compatible with the Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7132, but I imagine something might work that doesn't cover that specific model. How does the caddy (with HDD inserted) connect to the laptop to upload my files?

    Anyone's help is appreciated, Denise

    No.
You need to buy an external enclosure for the old HDD. Ensure it's the correct size - 2.5 or 3.5 inch. It will connect to the USB port that will also power it.

Ok, the one I showed you was under 10. Ok, I'll go down there tomorrow and maybe find one "in store". Thanks Eldon, really do appreciate it. The Cable sounds easier;) I won't know though until I actually figure it all out, how the HDD fits into an enclosure, and how it hooks to the laptop, and then how the cable works;) But now I have 2 ways to go:)

  33. Eldon

The cable's advantage is you are not limited by size or connector.

I would recommend a caddy - that lead gives no protection for the hard drive- I have used them, but is only useful for someone like us geeks, who use them a lot- for normal use I personally recommend this type
IT COMES WITH A SIMPLE USB LEAD TO CONNECT, AND THIS PARTICULAR ONE HAS AN ON/OFF SWITCH
If you look at the pictures in that add it shows how to put it in the caddy, and it then connects to the usb lead, to the laptop, and then switch on and the laptop should recognise it, and you can simply copy whatever you want from it-so easy. It also protects the hard drive.

Hmm, I was thinking of the enclosure, much like the one in your link @baklogic and that one does say enclosure. It's really confusing, caddy/enclosure. I was wondering if I bought the enclosure, could that also serve with a new external Hard drive that I eventually want to get for backing up?

  37. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

The enclosure will be the more suitable option for you. :)
For someone (like a PC technician) who has multiple HDDs, SSDs & CD/DVD ReWriters, that have either IDE or SATA connectors, the cable adaptor is the better option. ;)

there it is, I've gotten in too big a hurry and overlooked that statement you guys made the other day:) Ty Eldon. I guess lazy would be the better word:(

Anyway, I'm going out the door now, and I will see if there is anything at the store, if not, I'll order one. I think the enclosure might be more suitable for me. I don't want to mess up that old HDD before I rescue some things;)

About the only time I would use something like the cable that was suggested is when I'm cloning an older, smaller (capacity) drive to a new larger (capacity) or same (capacity) drive that's going to replace the old drive. Otherwise, ALL of my external hard drives are in enclosures. Yours should be too. They help protect the raw drive and provide heat dissipation. They come with a USB connecting cable appropriate for the enclosure but, if the cable isn't long enough for your needs, you can always buy a longer cable separately for $3 — $5 (DON'T get a cheap cable).

Ok @mdonah, I looked at Walmart today and they had some way expensive enclosures, I don't even think they were "just" enclosures, but they definitely didn't have the ones around 10 dollars. So I'll order one online, and have it sent to Wally World. When I pick one out, I'll probably show it to you guys first, before I order it, just to make sure. I'll do that tomorrow. ttyl, denise

  41. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

You're right. If they were "way expensive", they were more than likely external hard drives IN enclosures not just "plain" enclosures. But i must tell you, I've seen plain enclosures online for as much as $60.

Ok, going to order an HDD "enclosure" today. I have a snip of my old hdd, and the measurements are
2.75" x 4". Can someone tell me which enclosure will fit this for sure? I'll put a link to one they have online. I just don't see one for those exact measurements.

    https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=Enclosure for HDD

I have to go run errands but I'll be back. All I find are 2.5 in. and it doesn't tell the other measurement for length.

Thanks in advance for any help, Denise:)

7mm appear to be used for xbox's , 9.5mm for most laptops, and then upwards that I have bought in error over the years, 12.5mm and 15 mm , which would not go into the laptops - all my Toshibas had 9.5mm hard drives I have tried 7mm in them, and found them too floppy.
Am I wrong Eldon ?? I have to go, now-(getting late in UK) but please correct me if needed so that the user is not left in limbo
