I just uninstalled all Symantec products from my daughter's pc and installed Avast and Sygate.

I tried to Update WinXP SP-2 and found that it didn't automatically update since 4/15/05, even tho it's set to. I went in and tried to install from the site and got the following error:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

I hit continue and it said it updated files, however when MS scanned my pc to find necessary updates, and I got the same message. I cannot update and I have searched Microsoft, but can't figure it out. My head is pounding and I need HELP!

    Thanks so much!

hi pansygirl... i use Sygate as well, and was finding that i had to disable my firewall to get the updates... however another majorgeeks user suggested that i only have to allow access for the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services in order to get the updates correctly...

so when i visit Windows Update Site every couple weeks i just open my firewall, right click that icon and select allow... then when i'm done downloading and installing my updates i block internet access for Generic Host Process again...

    hope that helps

Thanks for your responses. I tried re-registering the following files:

    Start > Run > regsvr32 wuapi.dll > OK
    Start > Run > regsvr32 wups.dll > OK
    Start > Run > regsvr32 wuaueng.dll > OK
    Start > Run > regsvr32 wucltui.dll > OK
    Start > Run > regsvr32 atl.dll > OK
    Start > Run > regsvr32 MSXML3.dll > OK

Restart the computer, and then try Windows Update site again

I got the following error message:

    Windows can't find regsrv32

That scares me a lot. Anyone know what to do now?

    Thanks!

You typed it wrong, check your spelling.

Ok, the correction of the spelling took care of most of the problem. The only problem I had was the following:

    Start>Run>regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

    I get the following error:
LoadLibrary ("MSXML3.dll") failed - specified module could not be found.

    Next?

    Thanks so much!
