Last night I banged a corner of my HP DV9000, while it was in the laptop bag. Now, upon startup, the screen is all red, with HP logo as usual. Then the desktop images flicker, with red accents on some images. The images "vibrate" but do not disappear. The blue sky of the desktop image has "clouds" where a clear blue sky was before.

After it was jarred, a piece popped out, which I put back in. It is located right next to the DVD slot. It was a black, "L" shaped piece, with round pieces on it. I do not know if this is the issue or the actual LCD screen or a connection to it.

    Please advise....anyone....everyone...thanks....

If you've bashed your screen you may well have killed it.If the screen is distorted from the second you turn it on,as soon as you see the bios information and HP logo then its most likely a broken screen,if the picture only becomes distorted after windows loads then it may well be just a software glitch.

Connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if the picture is normal if it is you'll almost definitely need a new screen.

I'm not sure what that piece is without a photo of it so post one if you can,it could be the screen hinge cover from what your describing if this is the case you may have yanked the screen connectors as they pass through here, this can only be inspected upon disassembly of the laptop.

Thanks. I had just seen something about a cable not being connected properly. On the top, left corner of the laptop (not the lcd screen itself, but right below the lcd screen) there is a metal tray that comes out. I saw on a youtube video that the connector was reconnected and fixed the issue.

I guess the first place to start is to connect to a monitor. Is it possible to connect to another laptop monitor? I am such a newbie, probably a dumb question.

How do I hook up to desktop monitor? My brother has a desktop lcd monitor I could use. Otherwise I have another laptop of mine - HP V5000.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'metal tray' that comes out, every laptop I've ever worked on has to be partially disassembled to get to the various screen connectors.

To get to the rear screen connector and iverter power connector you have to remove the front screen bezel and rear screen plastic. To get to the mainboard screen connector you ahve to remove the bottom plastic, the keyboard, the plastic above the keyboard and various other buts depending on the manufacturer.

You need a regular desktop monitor and a VGA cable, the desktop monitor should have one connected to it then its just a case of connecting it to the blue VGA connector on your laptop, modern LCD TV's can also be used for this test.

It bad form to post links to other forums on here:p

Basically its says the same the screen is dead but you don't know that for sure yet, even for a skilled technician replacing the backlight is a big job.

I did wonder about that, but figured I am not trying to sell anything or promote anyone else, so posted it. It was only an aid for the situation.

I am actually using the laptop right now - wanted to see how it would function, or not. I posted from my other laptop yesterday.

Well, my laptop screen display had a spontaneous healing. All on it's own.

This lends credence to my feeling that it was a loose LCD cable. Hopefully this was the case and is resolved.
