    Lostkiwi,
I don`t know if his books are readily available in your neck of the woods, but I strongly reccomend anything by Ian Rankin, a Scottish author whose novels are set in Edinburgh. His main character, Inspector Rebus, is a bit of a rebellious policeman, but in no way are these books the average "crimmy"! Also you can learn a lot of local Scottish facts and history etc from the books. I like him , and I`m English!!!!

Hi Rex, I have just finished the 6th book too. I hope that Stephen King isn't serious about retiring after the 7th. There are a couple of other Dark Tower fans here too ;)

@harry: They sound good too. Lordy, with all the books I've been told to read and the reviews I need to give and the bedtime stories for you lot, I will be busy for months!!!

Anything by John Irving. Recently read A widow for One Year. A Prayer for Owen Meany was also excellent.
The Poisonwood Bible was really good, but I can't remember the author's name.

    HI,
I am just getting through The Waste Lands, and i have The Wizzard in the Glass all ready to go!!! I kind of jumped on that wagon kind of late. :)

I cant wait the finish the series and i cant belive he is thinking about retiring! I have to have more books! I have read quite a few, and still have some to go, but i will run out sooner or later. :)

From the FAQ on his site:

Q: Is it true that you have retired?

A: Not yet. I'm writing but I'm writing at a much slower pace than previously and I think that if I come up with something really, really good, I would be perfectly willing to publish it because that still feels like the final act of the creative process, publishing it so people can read it and you can get feedback and people can talk about it with each other and with you, the writer, but the force of my invention has slowed down a lot over the years and that's as it should be. I'm not a kid of 25 anymore and I'm not a young middle-aged man of 35 anymore-I'm 55 years old and I have grandchildren, two new puppies to house-train and I have a lot of things to do besides writing and that in and of itself is a wonderful thing but writing is still a big, important part of my life and of everyday.

Try The Callahan Crosstime Saloon series by Spider Robinson. It's considered sci-fi but its more humor then sci-fi.

    RE: The Dark Tower:
They are really good, all of them. It has been a long time since I read the first ones so I may go back and read them over. The one King book that I have read three times is The Stand, if you read that make sure you get the revised copy that has about 500 or so more pages.
The only SK book I haven't read is "On Writing", I'm sure I'll get to it some day :)
