Help installing SCBSolver on Vista?

Hi - I recently got a new desktop and the Vista operating system seems to be giving me some trouble as I try to install some of the old programs I had. I became quite addicted to a cryptography tool I found at secretcodebreaker.com called SCBSolver

    (download link here: http://www.secretcodebreaker.com/download.html)

When I unzip and try to run the SETUP.EXE file, I get the familiar screen that tells me:

"This program will install the Secret Code Breaker
Monoalphabetic Solver Program files on your computer
    in a directory labeled SCBSolvr.

Press Y to continue. Any other key cancels installation."

    When I press Y, I get:

    "Creating Directory SCBSolvr
    Error Encountered. Setup Canceled."

I don't know if this is a Vista incompatibility or not, but I suspect that it may be as I've had no problems installing it on an XP machine at my office. Does anyone have any suggestions for a workaround? Is there a way I can install the necessary files without running the installer?

    Thanks much.

Thanks for the reply! SCBSolver wasn't listed on MS's site, which in many ways was unsurprising - it's not a commercial product but rather something that the guy who runs secretcodebreaker.com gives away for free. There are very few hits on SCBSolver on google.

But after that I did wind up slogging through a solution... When I try to open the program without running the installer, it balks at not being able to find MSVCP50.dll, so I found that .dll at dll-files.com and installed it manually - and now SCBSolver seems to load okay.

Thank you very much for the advice! It prodded me to take another look.

    Hi

Glad you managed a workaround and cheers for posting it, in some instances with applications they don't or not programmed to take into accound vista's security so need you to install then as admin and the full one which is right click the said setup or exe then choose "run as administrator" then may also need to set them in properties > comparability tab as run as admin when installed

However to why I posted as you already have solution is that secretcodebreaker is a member here and may drop in and see your post and be able to update the app for vista.

That's who pointed me here actually! He said: "They are an excellent source of technical support. Very knowledgeable, experienced and quick in replying."

I don't believe any Vista updates are on the way - he is not running Vista himself, running XP, and so far this is the only reported incident. (That may indicate that it's not a Vista issue at all - maybe it was just a unique quirk with my machine's setup.)

    Hi addisonbr,

I'm the author of SCBSolvr (glad you like it!) and I just saw this.

I'm not in the least surprised you had problems installing on Vista, since the download from secretcodebreaker.com was created before even XP was released, and was built with MS VS 5 I think, hence the dependency on the msvc 5 runtime. Anyway, I'm glad you managed to sort it out.
