    Hi Guys,

I need your expertise on something. I have a desktop pc with windows XP Pro and a laptop computer with the same operating system. I am automatically connected to the internet by a broadband modem. I used to switch the cable between my laptop and desktop computer and the internet connection worked fine on either system.

Recently my internet connection doesn't work on my desktop pc, but when I switch the modem cable to my laptop it does work fine. So I know there is nothing wrong with my connection. I can't seem to find the problem. I have scanned for viruses or spyware through the threads on this site, but it finds nothing. I have even reinstalled windows xp pro but that didn't solve the issue. I am out of options right now. Is there anyone who can help me with my problem? Minor detail, sporadically the internet seems to work but at an extremely low speed. It takes about 5 minutes before a site is fully loaded. When I restart my computer it can't connect anymore. Now I think of it, the problem started when I connected my cable to my X box 360 to connect it to the internet. The problems started when i tried to run Internet from my desktop pc again. I also reset the modem.

    Thanks

Have you explored the option of your network adapter (Ethernet Port) possibly going bad or somehow became disabled?

    Roger,

The ethernet port seems to be fine.that is :i can see the light working on the back so that indicates it is sending and receiving..isn't it?

I have had a case where everything appeared fine to the naked eye, however...I finally ended up just running out to Officemax and buying a 15 dollar Ethernet card as a last resort troubleshooting method, and low and behold if that didn't resolve the issue!!

I'm not saying that is the most definitely the issue, but from what you are describing, if you haven't changed any OS settings...that is one of the troubleshooting steps I would take, however...I always have replacement parts on hand, specifically for troubleshooting purposes, and if I don't have the piece I need, the store is just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road!! I don't know if you have the same resources or not, or even if maybe you have a friend that can loan you a NIC card for testing purposes?? But if it is a possibility...I wouldn't rule that out!!

Ok thanks. It's something that I haven't even considered. I have a spare ethernet card available. Tonight I am going to try it. Let's see if it resolves the problem.
