Help! Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hi, I've recently started suffering with this problem, each and every time I try to surf the web. It is now impossible to use my computer. I've tried searching the internet for solutions but all mention seems to date back a couple of years.

The message report I get is:

AppName iexplore.exe
ModName mshtml.dll
AppVer 7.0.6000.16705

This seems to have all started when Windows downloaded new updates. I've trawled through the Windows site looking for updates or hotfixes, but am unable to find anything related to IE7.

Does anybody have any suggestions - in plain English please - I'm not terribly computer literate, although trying. Very trying, some might say!
