I went to update some RAM...adding another GB as the patriot memory I bought when I built my machine was like $60 on Newegg...I put it in today...closed everything up...and now the hot chick in my computer keeps saying "CPU test failed"....I took the new memory out...same thing...I feel like I have exhausted my options here...everything else appears fine...

Any ideas on what happened? How can I fix it?

    I have a A8V-E Deluxe motherboard from ASUS...AMD 64 3000+...

If you are referring to messge on the screen, breath a sigh of relief. The processor must be runing to get anything on the screen.
I expect when you put in the memory the BIOS checksum was wrong. You have to enter the bios with some systems and get it to recognise the changed memory. You do this by entering setup (the BIOS). Start tapping a key as you turn the power on usually it is F2 or DEL, watch the screen and it will tell you. Once in the bios allow the memory count, choose save changes and exit.
If all is well it will boot properly.

If you have disconnected any cables to help clear the memory slots and forgot to put the second power lead back or worse started changing modules without complete disconnection from the mains you could have killed the processor.

I get nothing on the screen...just the voice...

I did not need to disconnect any cable to have access to the modules nor did I forget to completely disconnect from the wall...or peripherals...what else could it be?

I install my stuff just like I would build it...on tile floor and a wood table...I was wondering if it was static...my place has been really dry but I didn't feel a shock...

I don't mind replacing the processor if it is fried...I just want to make sure that's all it is before I start buying stuff to work with my 939 motherboard...if it's more than the processor I probably will start from scratch...

I'm almost certain you have changed some setting somewhere, perhaps inadvertantly. Even if you motherboard was reading the message stored that's alot of memory. Do you hav eyou motherboard manual to check all the settings against?

He er she was refering to Asus Voice Reporter

Check CPU or could be the New ram as the Memory controller is on the CPU

Try removing new Ram, you might have to reset Cmos/Bios to bring back to Life, after reset, don't boot to windows, boot to Bios, set time & date, then set system Defaults or Optimized defaults, then boot to OS;)

If the above don't work Try:

Re seat your CPU, make sure your CPU HS fan is connected, reset CMOS, then try to post & access Bios
If you can access Bios then set Time & date then save default's ( or save Optimized Defaults) & exit then try booting to OS

    One Question
How many stick's of memory are you running, four stick's can stress the memory controller, setting Command rate to 2 might help

    A thought
Even though one my buy memory from the same place of the same brand or at different time as you,it is possible to get memory made from different chips and one might have compatibility problems.
It's common for memory manufacture to use different chips to make their memory

Reset CMOS...power on then had VGA test failed...powered off and didn't touch anything...powered on...nothing...blank screen...no warnings...powered off again touched nothing...turned power on again...it boots with video so I went into the setup...fixed system clock...set it up...restart...boom Windows Vista...played around for a little bit...then shut the machine down...man triumphs again...

Wake up this morning...power up..."CPU TEST FAILED"...Damn...machine wins another battle...

So I got it working...now how do I keep it working?

Is this board still under guarantee? It sound rather as though something is 'running down' overnight. However it has a standard coin cell battery, which should be still OK but check it anyway. If the battery voltage is above 3 volts it is OK.
Failing this have you upgraded the bios ? perhaps the flash didn't 'take' properly.
Otherwise your bios chip seems to be loosing settings, or there is a crack/hair short/ dry joint on the motherboard.
