My computer has been infected with a super-malicious virus. It has crippled the functionality of all my computer programs except Internet Explorer. Whenever I try to open any programs including antivirus, a window pops up stating that the application configuration is incorrect. I have tried to do online virus scans, but even when I lower security settings, the scan is unable to connect to my computer because the ActiveX doesn't install. I also tried to download a new antivirus program, but can't access the installation process.
Please respond if you have a solution. Thank you

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow the steps below:

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)

I followed the procedure, but I can't even install downloaded programs. For instance, when I go to unzip HijackThis, a window pops up stating that the "application configuration is incorrect." This virus is so severe, I can't even unzip or run any downloaded programs.

Copy the contents on the quote box to notepad and save as ZipFix.reg to your desktop.
Double-click on ZipFix.reg and answer 'Yes'.

    REBOOT

Download [FONT=Arial, Arial, Helvetica]EXE File Association Fix to your Desktop. UnZip and Double click the reg file; answer 'Yes'.

    REBOOT

Try the steps again, anything change?

I'm unable to run notepad because a message says the 'application configuration is incorrect' when I try to open it.

I can't download any programs, because I can never install them. That is the main problem for why I can't get rid of this virus; I can't do anything with notepad. Would reinstalling Windows XP get rid of the virus?

Save the registry fixes from another computer and run them on the infected computer. Otherwise you will have to do a clean install of the OS.
