help me start web page database...

what is best way to do this?

I want to design a web site for my company to get my name out there. I want to have a login system where users will be able to create userid/pwd and enter their work hours every day. It will then take their work hours, and put in editable spreadsheet-type interface.

Can someone point me in right direction? was thinking of either using vb.net then interfacing with a server through internet/cgi script, or using colf fusion or php or asp. Can someone point me in right direction as to how you would do it? Also where some free online beginner material is? I know lots of the basics of all the above mentioned languages, but don't know best way to do this, but I'm open to ALL suggestions. Thank you.

 

You could do the whole lot in PHP or ASP, really, then export and import to XLS files so you can work with data in Excel or whatever.

 

I decided I want to learn asp. So what is a good place to start. I have to use winxp to create my own server, and enable IIS, right?

This particular project can become a real bear if you don't CAREFULLY scope and spec it out before starting to build it. Reason being that there are so many levels of detail that can be built in to a tracking application that it can drive you crazy!

For example, will you allow users to charge hours to specific projects, or just straight hours-worked-daily? Will users be able to go back and edit their previous entries? You want to build the while app using script or imbed a spreadsheet program like Excel? Quarter hours? Minutes?

I could go on and on because, as you prolly guessed, I was faced with the same dilemma in a previous job.

I ended up locating an open-source ASP.net tracking engine and just modifying it for our company. You might think about looking for something similar in whatever language you decide upon. If you're going with Cold Fusion you can probably find something nice online at the developers exchange.
