Help Me - Windows keeps wanting to delete everything I open

I'm on a laptop running Windows Vista.

Whenever I try to open programs or files I get popups asking me if I want to move the program/item to my Recycle Bin. If I select No (or cancel), the same popup repeats about 50 times.

I have tried Virus Scan, Spyware scan, Defragging, Check Disk and Windows Updates all with no joy.

The Delete key on my keyboard does not seem to work. Could this be the cause or related?

Any suggestions would be really really appreciated!

The delete key could easily be jammed or shorted. Borrow a keyboard and see if that helps. If not we can go forward.

More details is always helpful. Laptop? Scanned with what?

    Hi,

It's a Dell Laptop. I've scanned it using Avast and Spybot with no joy. Also sometimes when I turn the laptop on it beeps continuously for about 10 seconds before booting up. Any ideas?

Go to Dell's website and do a search for beep codes.

I agree with MajorAttitude, 95% sure you have a jammed/sticking Delete key. All your symptoms point to it. I'm not sure if a key mapping program would be able to disable the key. That might be a possibility to test.

Try KeyTweak here. You can click on the Delete key in the keyboard diagram and select disable.

If you can then open a file normally without the Delete dialog boxes popping up then you confirm it is the keyboard. Once confirmed you can keep it disabled or go back to Tweakkey and restore the default of ON.

I'm not one to mess with keyboard repairs especially if a replacement keyboard is inexpensive. If it turns out to be the stuck key I would google your model laptop and keyboard replacement and take a look at the Shopping suggestions to get an idea of price. Some Dell keyboard replacements are quite reasonable in the $30 and under range.

You might have to right-click the program and select Run as Administrator since you are on Vista.

As mentioned one step at a time, until you eliminate the keyboard we are at a standstill.
