    Shadow,
I noticed something tonight when I rebooted my Adwatch showed registery changes to the files you wanted HJT to fix. I was able to delete those files when Adwatch was closed (ref. 11-22 HJT post) but when rebooted it appeared to reinstall them, (ref. HJT Second Post) attached.
Any idea what's going on. Adwatch is part of Ad-Aware. I have the paid version.
    Thank you.

    Huntbar is back.

Disable AdWatch and leave it disabled until we are finished, it may be interfering with the fixes.

Run HijackThis and fix the following:
    Reboot to Safe Mode.

Next use Windows Explorer to navigate to these locations and delete the files:
Reboot to Normal Mode. Run HijackThis and post a fresh log.

I disabled Adwatch and followed your instructions. However, I could not locate any of the files in Windows Explorer. I never have been able to locate them whenever you asked me to do that. I think when I enable Adwatch the files will come back b/c when I did that before they came back. Adwatch is suppose to stop those type of files. Any ideas? I'm concerned I've had Sys Restore turned off for so long too.
Thank you. Fresh HJT file attached.

This log looks as if it is from Safe Mode. If so, post a fresh log from Normal Moce.

Leave Adwatch disabled, reboot a few times, open and close some programs, surf the net. Then come back here and post a fresh HijackThis log; and let us know how things are working.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I've been using my computer, surfing, using programs, etc... it appears to be running pretty well. Somtimes it gets hung up, runs a little slow. Should I enable sys restore and run Microsoft updates now?
    Thank you.

I tried to run updates and now my computer is running very slow and the resolution is very bad. It will not allow me to update the resolution. What have I done?

Uninstall the Video driver and reinstal the drivers that came with your computer. Never use driver updates from Microsoft/Windows Update more often than not they will cause problems.

You have a variant of Huntbar on your computer.

Scan with HijackThis and fix the following:
    Download
    - Pocket Killbox

    Now run Pocket Killbox:

Choose Tools -> Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note many of the file list below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

    Now boot into SAFE MODE

Open Windows Explorer navigate to and DELETE the following: (Some of these may have already been deleted by Pocket Killbox)
Now run CCleaner. If you have Windows XP delete the contents of C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch.

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start -> Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

    REBOOT to Normal Mode.

    Post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Your log is clean.

At this point I don't think malware is the problem. You have several HP processes running in the background, try disabling those and see what it does for system speed. Norton may also be causing the sluggishness. You may wnat to consider uninstalling Norton completely and using an alternative AV program and firewall.

Alternatives can be found in How to Protect yourself from malware!.

You mentioned in the beginning after we got my computer clean we would update it. Should that be done at this point? If so, how.
What should I do about Adwatch?
    Thank you for your help.

Leave Adwatch off, it could interfer with the updates.

Run Windows Update and only do the critical updates. You may have to do this a few times to get all the updates.

Why would so many HP programs be running? How can you tell they're running in the background? How do I know which ones to disable? Should I install SP2?
    Thanks.

    These ar all HP services:
Do you have an HP printer or device installed?

    Yes install SP2.

Yes I have a HP Printer installed. These programs keep coming back after I delete them. Update is stuck at 19% too. How can I see what update is updating? I tried right clicking and double clicking the update icon. Nothing.

  18. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

That were the HP services that are running came from.

Stop the Update, download this copy of SP2; http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en; it is a standalone; download it to your desktop. When you get ready to install SP2, make sure you are disconnected from the internet, shut down everything from Norton; the AV prg, the firewall, everthing. Shut down all unnecessary programs. Now run the SP2 installer; after SP2 has been installed reboot and connect to the internet and run Windows Update.

OK, let it finish, SP2 is a large download, and will take some time to finish.

  23. debeye

    debeye Private E-2

Is there any way I can see what is being downloaded? Do you think SP2 is part of the download?

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

You should have been able to review what was being downloaded before you clicked on install updates. Yes SP2 is very likely part of that download.

I tried to install Sun Java but it's telling me Window Installer is not there. How can I get Windows Explorer back. Man, I hate Microsoft and Windows, everything is so complicated!!!!

  26. debeye

    debeye Private E-2

It didn't let me see anything.

  27. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Let the update finish; you shouldn't be trying to download and install anything else while you are updating your system. You probable shouldn't be surfing while updating your system.

Link to Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)

The download has completed. I will try to install the updates later today. I keep getting an error when I try to install Windows Installer. It will not allow me to install it. I have a feeling this may impact installing SP2.
    Thank you.

SP2 install failed. It will not allow me to install any other update too. My computer is running very slow still. I posted a HJT file just in case you want to see it.
