I've been trying for the past few days to resolve my popup issues. I located your site by doing a google for "DiskCleaner" which was one of my symptoms. I ran Hijackthis a few times along with your other recommendations, I tried to repair things myself but I’m at my wits end. Thank you for the help in advance. I will attach the log files you recommend and will do a follow-up post with the remaining logs.

Thank you for all your help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Next time (if there is a next time), please follow the directions in the READ ME correctly. You did not empty your Norton Quarantine as requested in step 1 and you did not follow the directions for creating a Bitdefender log. It should be an text file with HTML formatting in it so that we can view it with a browser after we rename it.

What are the below folder and file from? They were created recently? What is in the folder.
    C:\1d404e3dafdfd05e6ee77735166e <--- this is a folder.
    C:\cf89b8a0-03ee-414c-a514-345f95ee07d5.cab

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of kbdavi.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the kbdavi.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)
Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of kbdavi.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {965EF971-BE18-47C8-A901-9C7B248B857D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdavi.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: kbdavi - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kbdavi.dll
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdavi.dll
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

“ empty your Norton Quarantine as requested in step 1”
I tried to empty the quarantine but the new version of Norton didn’t show this files so I could delete them. But with the help of KillBox I was able to delete them. At first it just moved the files over into the !KillBox directory so Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal tool found them in that directory, but then I figured out how to purge them from KillBox.

“you did not follow the directions for creating a Bitdefender log.”
Sorry about that, I ran this a few time and I attached the wrong file. I ran the whole process over and included it this time.

“What are the below folder and file from? They were created recently? What is in the folder.
    C:\1d404e3dafdfd05e6ee77735166e <--- this is a folder.
    C:\cf89b8a0-03ee-414c-a514-345f95ee07d5.cab”
The folder was generated when I double clicked on the download of “Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal tool”. Not sure about the file.

“If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).”
I did receive this message but it was while I was deleting the files from the Norton Quarantine directory, not when I was deleting the kdbavi.dll file.

I hope I did everything correctly this time around. So far I haven’t seen any popup. Should I delete some of those files I see in the logs? It would be great if there was one utility to do all this stuff it would be worth its weight in gold.

Let me know how I can make a donation to the cause. You guys are the best.

the last two log files will be in my next post

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
