    Hi All,

I have a pentium 4, approx 1 year old. It has 1gb ram, so should go fairly fast and does once it's booted up.

The problem I'm having is when it boots up, the screen that says 'Windows XP' and has the blue bar, seems to take forever. The blue bar can click over 20 times before it actually goes to the desktop, however pauses after that again, to the screen going black for a few seconds and then onto the desktop.

I was wondering if this has something to do with the bios set up, as I did have the problem once beforeconfused

If anyone could give me some advice, I'd be more than grateful;)

    Cheers

    Morning Blondie

Copy the text between the lines
    ------------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc >"%USERPROFILE%"\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    -----------------------------------------------
    then
    Start-Run
    type
    CMD
    hit enter

Now rt click and paste the above and hit enter

There will apear on your desktop a file Tasklist.txt

Open it copy all and paste back to me.

    Then

    Click Start-Run
    type
    services.msc
    Click OK or hit enter

    Find DNS Client
    Dbl click it
    then
set Startup type to Disabled and click the Stop Button
    Click apply then OK.

Now reboot to see if it boots faster.

You should not need this but if the Internet does not work just go back and set it to automatic and click the start button.

    Hi Mike,

Ok, I downloaded and ran ATF-Cleaner, when I opened it a second time, it said all was clean. I already had c-cleaner and have run it a few times, but cannot delete some temp files.

    Their location is C:\Documents and Settings\Home\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\desktop.ini 145 bytes

I cannot view this folder, I have folder options set to 'show hidden folders and files' but isn't thereconfused

    Hi Blondie

Are you on a network or a single home computer?

If on a stand alone computer do the following

Back to services as in my other post

Disable and stop the following services be sure to Apply and OK each.

    Clipbook
    Computer Browser
    Error reporting Services
    Indexing Service
    IPSEC services
    Machine Debug Manager
    Netlogon
    Netmeeting Remote desktop
    Remote registry
    SSDP Discovery Service
    Uninterruptible Power Supply
Universal Plug and Play device host
    Web Client

    Then Reboot

These services are not need by most network or not. If needed they can be turned back on.

    Good on the cleanup.

OK on the file that will not delete.

Note: These cleanups work even better in Safe mode.

    Download Startup Control Panel
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html

Run this and uncheck all statrups and reboot. If it boots the same immediately go back and recheck the all.

If it boots normally now recheck one program at a time and reboot until you find the program that is slowing down the boot.

I suggest reenable the Virus scanner first. If it boots ok the go to the next.

    Get back.

    Thanks Mike,

I've done everything you suggested, I clicked off all the programs, rebooted the pc and didn't seem to be any better... The virus scanner started up even though it was ticked off.. Doesn't seem to be booting up any quicker

I'm running Trend Micro 2006 if that makes any difference.

    :wave OK

In Startup control panel get every thing back to normal as none of these are our slowdown. So it could be the Virus scanner.

Is the Virus schedule to up set to update on computer startup?

Also look for a setting to disable the Virus scanner so we can test that.

When you do the Startup control just delete things you are sure you don't need to be auto starting. Like realplayer quicktime etc. They will still run when needed but they don't need to running on starup.

When you get finished with the Scan reboot to safe mode and see it it has the same issue. Likely not but lets find out.

    Hi Blondie

We need the event logs from a clean boot.

    So do this:

    Close all programs.

    Start-Run
    type or paste the below
    eventvwr.msc
    hit enter

Now rt click each entry and Chose Clear all events

Once cleared do nothing else but a normal reboot

When back up completely no hour glass on mouse.

Go event viewer and send me the logs for System and Application.

To do this rt click System and then Save Log file as:
then give it a name System
Change the Save as type: to *.txt
Note where it is saving the file

Now do the same for Application name it apps.

Now attach these 2 files and send.

What this will do is by (clearing the old logs) show us only events that have happend since we cleared the logs and that will be the shutdown and startup.

    Hi Blondie

You have done a great job in these tasks.

I have a harder job to test this and you will be dissapointed as I was when you hear this.

Your computer is in good condition. The one Authendication error in the event logs point to the Trend Virus scanner. Took me a while to find it.

I was looking for Slow Boot with Trend 2006 and I came accross the following:

    http://www.bullguard.com/forum/11/Slow-boot-up-of-XP-home_19636.html

Even tho I am not a Trend user I had a better impression than that of them.

    This up to you:
I suggest that you un-install it just to confirm it is the cause for sure. It can be re-installed.

Based on the above you may want to consider another Virus product.

I will make reccomendations if you decide to do so.

Here are the steps I would take to do this:

I would boot to safe mode and try to uninstall in Add/remove programs any and all Trend items. NOTE I said try. Some un-installers will not work in safe mode. But if they do it is better. Any program that uses the Microsoft installer will not un-install in safe mode. I doubt that Trend uses it.

    So try in safe mode.

After un-install reboot again to safe mode. Then do a Files and folders search for trend*.* also at the bottom of search click the advanced options and select system and hidden.

    Delete all references found.

After the search and deletion. Run CClean "Run cleaner" twice, then on the left click Issues then "Scan for issues" and delete all. Repeat until no more are found.

Run ATF-Cleaner untill it find nothing then reboot.

I think that will cure the boot issue.

If it is the issue we need to get it re-installed or something better pretty quick.

    Ball is in your park.

    Hi Mike,

Thankyou so much for all your help. I have uninstalled 'Trend' and scanned for any other files, all gone. I also ran cc cleaner, that is still going.

I called the computer shop where I bought it, seeing as it's finally day time here!!! They said to simply re-install windows!!! May do if still necessary.

I will keep plugging along here and see if any of the suggestions you've given fix the problem.

Once again, thankyou for all your support.

    Cheers

    Hi Mike,

I would greatly appreciate if you could give me some suggestions on Anti Virus programs. I have decided not to keep going with Trend Micro, as the pc seems to be running ok without it.

    Hi Blondie:)

    Ok! You do good!

    But let me understand.

The computer you said always ran good after the slow boot. Do you mean to say it boots normally now?

And where did the reinstall windows idea come from?

Why would they say that you need to re-install windows. I see no reason for that unless you have other information that i don't know!

    I reccomend AVG.

Even free it is as good as the best.

    http://majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition_d886.html

I have used it for years as have many of my freinds and associates and all like it.

How are you connected to the Internet directly to a cable/dsl modem or thru a router to a cable/dsl router.

Tired. Time for bed. Will look for a reply tomorrow.

Go ahead and install the AVG.

Nice job mflyn. Just a quick suggestion - just what Trend package did you have, blondie? Anti-virus, Anti-spyware and a Firewall might all be in your Trend product and you will need replace all of these (which can be done right here, for free)

    Hi Doofus,

It was Trend (full package) 2006... I have been downloading a few from here just to check them out, however I was wanting more of a professional opinion as to what the best was to use.

    Thanks for your input ;)

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your advice about AVG, I will download that, have that installed on Mums' computer and doesn't seem too bad.

I don't know why the computer place told me to re-install Windows, as they said that it was an issue with Windows XP (probably just too hard for them to explain the problem over the phone) but too big an issue for me to do as I have so much data on here, would definately prefer not to!

It seems to be booting up a lot quicker now.

I am directly connected to a D-Link ADSL modem, which seems to be ok.

Anyway, will leave it there for now, I hope you had a good nights sleep ;)

    Good morning Blondie and Doofus

Thanks Doofus for the compliment. Yes I knew she had the full Trend package including Firewall. I was trying to keep it simple, one thing at a time. That is the reason I asked in my last post how she was connected to the Internet.

You did very good Blondie. Thank you so much for asking and not jumping the gun on re-installation of Windows. It is very discouraging for us to almost have something fixed and the next post tells us it is now fixed by a format and re-install, usually losing a lot of personal data.

By the way. How long was the Boot time before and what is it now? Not only was this program faulted for Boot time it was also faulted for processor usage. Have you noticed improvement after boot also? Let us know as others may be interested.

I would be careful with this "shop". Sure they can fix it every time with a re-install. In some cases they don't have the skill to troubleshoot and fix. Some of these shops don't care about your installed programs or you data.

So always get a second opinion, here would be the best place.

Now the reason I asked about your Internet connection.

If you have a router then in most cases the Windows Firewall is sufficient. Some think a router is a Firewall but it is not. A router acts as a natural Firewall by the very nature of what it does. It offers a first level of protection in addition to the windows Firewall.

For the average person this is enough. If you visit a lot of bad places P2P, Crack sites, most game sites some music download (non P2P) then even with a router you need more than the windows firewall.

So for a commercial Firewall I would recommend the AVG Personal Firewall
    http://majorgeeks.com/downloads34.html featured software at top.

For a free Firewall I recommend the last free version of Kerio
    http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page7.html

This version is just as good as the new version 40 as a Firewall but has much less processor load. There are complaints on Version 4 for being a processor hog. Also the one above is simpler to setup and control. When you install any Firewall there will be a period of learning for you and it. You will have to tell it what to allow or block etc.

Almost any Firewall you chose will be better than the Windows Firewall. It is a one way non stateful Firewall.

Kerio is a 2 way stateful Firewall. I know you may not understand that but take my word for it, it is a good thing.

What ever you chose, you do not want it to be a processor hog. After you install one then do two things. In Control panel turn off the windows Firewall then in Services disable it.

Well I will stop here for now until your next response.

    Mike

PS Has the BBS been down for hours at a time the last 4 days? All else Yahoo and Msn etc were OK. If it has not been down for you then I may have a problem to deal with. I expected an announcement from ADMIN but saw none?????

    Hi Mike,

Thankyou so much for your reply. I understand your reasoning for not re-installing Windows XP, that is the last thing I want to do.

My son booted up this morning and said 'she worked like a charm', so things seem to be working a whole lot better.

I am now running AVG anti spyware and I will also download Kerio and let you know how I go with the processing of that.

Thanks again for your support, couldn't have done half of it without you ;)
