It is still not letting me message you. Try logging out and then back in.

Also in settings the next option after enable private messaging just shows as a blank box for me with no description. Make sure that one is unchecked.

Well, someone has uploaded a ghost image of their s10e factory restore disc. The file is 3.55gb. It would be an ideal way to get that thing loaded back to defaults but their instructions are using both a USB flash and a USB CD drive. I'm trying to think if it would possible to do the restore with just a 4gb USB. I'm downloading it and am going to see if it is possible to do it using just a USB. Ihave a 4gb and will test the possibility. If it works then you can consider getting a 4gb USB.

In the meantime I am going to try tgell's suggested software and see if I can get my XP installation files to boot from USB but I have not had luck with several other programs so I am not hopeful.

What did you need to do to get the wireless working? I'm just curious.

im not sure i clicked on wireless then i got on i really cant remember,,but i logged off now its not working again..never had this issue with xp my connection says wireless active but i cant get on web anymore server not found?

I really don't know I''ve never had to set up wireless. I do know my ISP requires a password that I can get to through my router. Mine is working so I stay away from those settings.

Finally just completed the Ghost download so I will give it a shot now to see the possibilities.

I was able to boot from USB using tgell's software (I think his link is bad/suspect because my AntiVirus immediately quarantined everything I tried to download from that site--this link is ok http://www.datafilehost.com/download-dfc48473.html and the file size is smaller so I would avoid the other link). But I got a blue screen of death after the first reboot of the installation process. I'm not sure if that is because I have Win7 on this computer or not. It is an option if this recovery software doesn't pan out.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, you have to partition to make space for XP. But I believe you said you had 70gb unallocated (that seems high) so it would just be a matter of creating a partition in the unallocated space. Xp installation can do it or gparted can do it.

I getting ready to experiment with this ghost copy to see if I can get ghost and the backup on the same USB stick.

I got ghost to boot from USB but I haven't tested it with the recovery image yet. That won't be until tomorrow since I have to find an empty HD. There is apparently some problem with booting ghost from USB in that it thinks it is the C: drive. I haven't figured out the workarounds yet. I'll let you know how it goes.
Download this text file since I can't message you.

I haven't forgotten you. I had chores to do this morning. Now, I am working on it. I successfully cloned the image using a 4gb drive. Just finished. But I can't get it to boot yet. I'm not sure if that is because my hardware is different or why. I just loaded up this boot UBCD and will take a look around this HD to see what is going on.

Hang in there. I've got a few Xmas presents to finish wrapping and then I am back at it.

I'm having limited success. I was able to write the files to drive but it wouldn't boot on my computer. I then used a utility to force boot and got causgt in an activation loop. I wanted me to activate but it didn't have the right drivers for my nic card and wouldn't let me get into windows to change it. I'm hoping that won't be the case for you because it should have the drivers for your computer.

I've got to test two things and then I think it makes sense for you to do it on your machine to see if it is just a driver conflict problem.

One thing you could do is see if you can use Gparted to create two more partitions on your HD with the last one being 10gb. So ifyou have 70gb free then try and create one with 60gb and one with 10gb and format the 10gb one to NTFS or FAT32. If you need help with that I should be able to get back into Linux in about an hour.

I made that link available again so you can redownload.

I am trouble figuring out how to do this using a 2gb USB flash.

Since you seem to be okay with spending time testing stuff let me see what can be done about saving your current Linux partitions. Ideally we would let ghost take over the whole drive removing linux and setting things to defaults. Then you could put linux back on which would eliminate boot loader problems.

I have a new plan to test. I'll probably still get an error because my hardware doesn't match but it may work to preserve your linux partition.

    ______
I'm going to install linux on this old HD and test the two partition theory. So it will look pretty much like your HD will during install. I hope Windows ignores the current linux partition and assigns its drive letter to C:.

Firstly, I apologize for a wasted day. It is was all a bit of hurrying up and waiting while linux installed and then re-formatting my USB stick and putting DOS files on it and back and forth. Internet drop-outs all day haven't helped. Ghosting should be simple but only using a USB stick makes it surprisingly complicated.

Unfortunately, Linux Mint's partition manager during installion is not good. It seems to take over the whole drive no matter which option you choose. It has taken over your whole hard drive. (As it did to me a couple of times :( ) Now, I understand how you lost your original XP files.

You have one partition of 71gb and one of 3gb. Which means your whole drive is taken up by Linux. I haven't found a software that can resize a linux partition. A quick google search, just now, seems to indicate resizing that 71gb is possible but it needs a live CD which we have to figure out how to get to USB.

I'm going to finish completing a way to get the ghost image to your HD using a 2gb stick but now it looks like you must lose linux to do it. If you really think keeping such a new install of Linux is important then I will investigate resizing the linux partition and adjust the steps as necessary.

I know I said it before but I am almost there.

    Hi pongo,

If we are to use the ghost image then it has to take over the whole HD. Linux will be lost. It should take you back to factory settings where you start your computer and it begins setting up XP. Because Xp isn't actually set up in the ghost image it needs both the C: and D: drives to begin to install Windows.

I really don't think there is any way around erasing the whole HD to use the ghost image.

There may be a way of installing XP by way of copying your Windows XP installation CD to USB and going from there. I think I have read enough these last few days to help with that if you want.

I know I can get the ghost image onto your HD but I am unsure if it will start properly. It doesn't start on mine without third-party software but on you S10e it might be fine since they are compatible.

anyway to get xp back in is fine losing linux is no big deal it only takes 5 min to reinstall it.

here is a answer i got when asking about xp installation using gparted maybe you can understand it better.

Windows XP needs to be in the first bootable primary partition. i.e. The first primary partition with the boot flag set in the partition table.
You could just shrink your existing primary partition /dev/sda1 and then create a new partition using the free space made available and install XP there.
It might be better to clone your Linux Mint install into the free space and alter your bootloader so that you can also boot the cloned partition. Once you have this working, copy the MBR to a safe location so that you can restore it if necessary. Then install XP into the first primary partition. You will need to alter your bootloader to include booting XP.

    Ok.

This is going to be a complicated process. You will need Linux on the HD to complete it. But we have to have 10gb free to hold the ghost image.

The basic procedure will be to make room for the ghost image on your HD. Break up the ghost image into 3 pieces so each one will fit onto your USB. Copy them over using linux to the 10gb space. Use 7zip to put the 3 parts back together into one piece. Then boot from a USB with ghost on it to install the factory image onto the HD.

First I want to make sure you have linux 10 installed and you have p7zip installed or it is available as a download to install. So in linux go to start/menu Package manager and Search for 7zip and see if you get a green dot for the basic p7zip package.

    Good.

I'm working on getting gparted on a USB. It has to be run outside of Linux Mint to shrink the partition.

You can work on splitting your ghost image. The file you downloaded contains a S10e Ghost Image.exe you have to execute that file on your Windows machine to decompress the file. You will end up with a S10e.GHO file.

Download 7zip for windows http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/7-zip_portable and run the exe to extract it to a folder you can find like the desktop. Then run the 7zip-portable.exe. You want to browse to your GHO file and then click Add. In the window that opens you want to change compression to Store and for split to volumes you want to change it to 1400m then Ok. You should end up with three files ending in numbers like 001.

Ok. I'll get gparted working and have it ready. What OS is your Windows machine running? Need to know because Win7 doesn't like .bat files and we need to run one to get gparted on USB. I have the workaround to get it to execute the .bat but it is not necessary on XP. Either that or use linux to set up the USB.

You should have a file named S10e Ghost Image.exe of about 3.4gb in size in the upload folder. Doble clicking it will extract it to another file S10e.GHO also of about 3.4gb.
