Hi, You want to put zero for free space preceding . Put 10000 for free space following. It should fill in the new size (middle selection) by itself. Then hit Resize/Move button. Then Apply.

When it is done creating the unallocated 10gb space and gparted refreshes the window. You need to rightclick the new 10gb unallocated space and click New. Set the Size to 10000 (leave the preceding and following boxes at zero) and the filesystem to FAT32. Click Add. Click Apply.

You should have a large linux partiton and a 10gb FAT32 partion when gparted refreshes. You can remove the USB key and reboot into linux to make sure it is still working.

    *************
Now back on your Windows PC right click the EXE you just finished downloading select Properties and see if Size matches: 3.55 GB (3,822,114,446 bytes) so we know we are working with the full file.

Do you have 4gb free on the Windows PC? Do you have the 8GB USB stick? Need to know so that we can figure out where to run the EXE.

Take a look at this picture. http://www.simplehelp.net/images/gparted/Screenshot013.png You want to do the same thing except use 10000 instead of 261.

Your graph should look like that one except only a small part of it is yellow. Try putting zero in preceding and then on the graph grab the black arrow on the right and drag it over towards the left until the following box gets to about 10000 (it doesn't have to be exact).

That sounds right. The graph show small yellow large white and about an inch of grey?
Boxes should be 0 for preceding, 63165 for size and about 10000 for after. If so then go ahead and resize. (I was unclear the size box should show numbers for your drive which is the 63165 not 4579. Sorry)

i get a blue screen it says package configuration after all the scrolling screen.

there are 4 choices before i hit ok

    select keymap
    dont touch keymap
    keep kernel keymap
    select keymap from full list

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Right-click on the large partition in the graph and select resize/move. Then in the window that opens drag the right slider to the left until you get about 10000 for the following box and hit the move/resize button and see if the small window closes.

now i got free space preceding 0
    newsize 12379

Can you Resize with those numbers? Will it allow you to hit the resize button? If so do it.

    pongo Staff Sergeant

when i rebooted my laptop, and checked it was not there i must have not saved it?

  19. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

You have to hit Apply after hitting the Move/Resize button.

When you hit the resize button it should close the small window. In the large window it should put a line at the bottom showing the changes that are waiting to be applied. You then hit the Apply button. And it gives a popup box saying it is working then refreshes the picture.

  20. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

i got a pop up saying caution did you get this.i hit apply but it does not look like its doing anything.

  21. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes it is warning you that you are working on a system partition. It worked fine for me. Just go ahead and make the change. Are you at 10000 following?

  22. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    ok i think i created a 12.06 gib

    file system unallocated
    size 12.06gib

    first sector 0
    last sector 25288703
    total sectors 25288704

is that correct do i need to change it to fat32 or save it?

what is this ...Are you at 10000 following?

  23. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Did you hit Apply and get it going through the motions?
If you did then go ahead and format to FAT32.
You can right-click the grey area and choose New. (I don't remember if that just opens the format box or if you also have to select partition somewhere.) Then choose FAT32 as the format Click Add. The window should close and hit Apply.

all have to reboot the laptop and start over.

    pongo Staff Sergeant

ok when i right click on the big partican is it the big long bar at the top or the /dev/sda1 ext

    just 3 particans

    ext 71.45gb 12.08gb 59.37gb

    extended 3.08gb

    linux-swap 3.08gb

  28. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I'm not certain what i am reading in those numbers.

What does the graph look like? It says /dev/sda1 with some yellow and a lot of white. Anything to the right of that?

  29. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

yes a little yellow on numbers in it then alot of white that says /dev/sda1 71.45gib

  30. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok lets see. It looks like you might have a partition we can use. click on the 12.08 partition in the list below the graph. Now the display should change any yellow showing?

Do the same with the 59.37gb one any yellow showing?

  31. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok I just booted Gparted. We still only have one partition sda1. We want to create a sda2.

Try to resize again. Just drag the slider over so you have at least 10000 in the space following box and hit resize. What happens?

  32. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

i think your mistaken heres it exactuly

    partican file system
    size used unused
    /dev/sda1 ext4 71.45gib 12.08gib 59.37gib

    are all in the first

  33. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes I was mistaken. Just try to resize sda1 by slecting resize and dragging the slider to give about 10000 following and hit resize button. What happens? Any message? does the window close?

  34. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

when i try to resize i get a pop up screen then i put in the numbers thats as far as i can go apply is not highlited and i cant move slider.

  37. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Wait. You don't want to change the format of sda1. That is your linux partition

  38. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

    This is a nightmare...

Now what does the graph say?

  39. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

ok all list all particans in order

par filesystem size used unused flags

    /dev/sda1 fat32 12.08gib .... .... .....

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok, This gparted stuff should have been a 5 minute deal. I don't understand why it isn't working. I did it several times on a PC with Mint installed and it was just a matter of clicking the buttons.

We can do the re-image the drive without it. I just thought it was the safest way to get a proper image.

There are two ways to proceed.

If you have the larger USB we can use that and image directly off that. It will be slower about an hour and a half.

We can image off the linux partition. You just get an extra warning during the process but I tested it and it appeared to work. I can't be 100% certain because the image is for your PC and won't work on mine but everything looked to be correct.

So did you get the 8gb USB or do we need to do 7zip. If we use 7z we'll just do it off the Linux partition.

  45. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

ok im back on gparted from usb.my first partican says

    /dev/sda1 ext4 12.08gib 12.08gib 140.00kib boot

    is that correct.

no i dont have that big usb.

Ok. That looks like you cut sda1 down as far as it can go. So now you have a lot of unallocated space to the right of it?

  47. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

yes looking at the screen ,the long bar on the top.
on the left i got /dev/sda1 12.08gib then on the right unallocated 59.37gib

  48. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

should i click apply all operations.

  49. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

No if you are just cutting down I wouldn't go down that far on sda1. Can you move the slider of have you already hit resize/move? Just use Edit undo all operations. Then try again leaving sda1 at least 25gb.

I'm only curious what did the graph look like when you first opened gparted from USB?

    pongo Staff Sergeant

there was no 12.08gib partican 1 was 71 gib and 2 others at 3.08gib

problem is i cant get the slider to work
