Do you see the slider? Have you forgotten to right-click sda1 and choose resize?

ok i right clicked on sda1

    freespace preceding 0
    new size 12373
    freespace following 60792

im on resize and move is this where i move the bar on the left.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

No you take the arrow on the right and drag it to the left. It should move the numbers in the size and following boxes. You want about 10000 in the following box.

If you get that hit resize/move. It should close the window. And then try Apply.

    EDIT:
Sorry you take the one on the right and move it more to the right to get the following box down to about 10000
You want to keep the preceding box at 0 (that is most important)

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, right click sda1 select resize/move.
Window opens with graph with a balck arrow on each end. Grab the one on the right and drag towards the left until the box for space following shows about 10000. Click resize/move button the window should close. That is it. The box does not seem to be closing for you.

I keep forgetting you are on a laptop.

    Forget the dragging part.

Close the resize box. Go to Edit>undo all.
Right-click the sda1 and select resize. Window opens.
type 10000 in the following box. (Size box will adjust automatically)
Tab to Resize button and enter. Does it close?

ok done.i wish i could get a pic to show you.

    i have 4 particans

    /dev/sda1 ext4 61.68 12.08 49.60gb boot

    unallocated unallocated 9.77gb

    /dev/sda2 extended 3.08gb

    /dev/sda5 linux-swap 3.08gb

so looks like(10000)in free space following it created a 9.77gb partican is that correct.because i can only seem to get it as high as 12.08gb.

    That looks good. Hit Apply.

*The 12.08 is the space use on sda1. sda1=61.68 total space with12.08 used and 49.60 unused.

    pongo Staff Sergeant

The way it was would be fine. All you want to do is make sure that free space before is zero and free space after is at least 10000. In the text below the graph anything close to what you just had would be great.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Did you get a window saying completing operation?

  18. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Just go ahead and try and format it. I hope your touchpad works or you know how to get the dropdown for the format types. I don't know how to do that by keyboard.

Right-click the unallocated space and select New. Leave the numbers alone and just select FAT32 from the FileSystem dropdown.

  19. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

no all i get is are you sure you want to apply the pending operations.i click apply then that it?

  20. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    ok new partican#1 fat32 size-9.77gb

this partican is the second partican the one above it is /dev/sda1 filesystem-ext4 size 61.68gb used-12.08gb unused 49.60gb flags-boot

  21. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

OK you tab to the filesystem dropdown box and hit the spacebar and then the arrow keys to select FAT32.

So, Right-click the unallocated space and select New. Leave the numbers alone and just select FAT32 from the FileSystem dropdown using Tab and spacebar and arrow keys.

    Tab to Add and <enter>
    Window closes. Click Apply.

Perfect. Go ahead and boot into Linux and in Computer see if you see the new drive. It will probably be listed with the size in its name.

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes start your regular linux and you can go to gparted and check.
Or just go to Computer on the desktop and see if you can find an icon for the drive and it opens to an empty window.

  26. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    no not there.......ahhhhhhhhhhhh

all do it again hang on.

what i dont get is i dont get this.

(Did you get a window saying completing operation)

  27. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, when I hit the resize button it closes and in the regular window a line is added describing the operation and at the bottom of the window it says one operation pending. Then I click apply and a grey window comes up showing a progress type bar. Takes about 30 seconds and then closes.

  28. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

ok ,everytime i hit apply then go to exit it,i get a popup saying 2 operations are currently pending.

I'm beginning to think you are trying to get your post count up to a thousand to become a Major Geek. ;)

I really don't think it is a permissions issue. I tried it out before I gave you instructions. Gparted was the only software I tested that could shrink a Linux partition with no problems. It really took me all of 2 minutes to do it.

I really think we can just skip the partitioning part Ghost seems to allow the GHO file to be on the disk you are writing an image to. I don't know how it does it so fast but it seemed to complete ok.

The worst that happens is you have to reinstall Linux if the image isn't good. That doesn't take long. You are going to lose this Linux partition during imaging anyway. We would only need to reinstall if the imaging goes bad and we need to re-use 7z.

So let's just check the size of your EXE and make sure it matches to 3.55 GB (3,822,114,446 bytes) in the Size: line when you right-click it and select Properties. If it matches then run it by double-clicking.

ok 1 more thing do you get what is in this picture, because i do not.

    Attached Files:

  35. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    yes correct size.

  36. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok it is applying the changes but it says it will take 31 minutes. I don't know why it would take that long.

It also says that sda1 was already at 31gb not 70gb which I thought we were still at. I would let it complete it can't hurt. Then we can see if it will format or if it is formatted.

While we are waiting go ahead and run the exe. Then we will check the size of the GHO it produces. Let me know how much free space you have on your Windows HD after the gho is extracted. (We may have to delete the exe to free up space but it won't matter if the gho is the right size)

  37. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

lol no thats not my picture just asking if you got a popup like that because i do not.im unzipping the image now.

  38. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    OK UNZIPPED s10e GHO 3904,713kb

  39. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I'd believe anything the way this has been going!

The GHO when right-click properties should be Size: 3.72 GB (3,998,425,790 bytes)

You'll need another 3.75GB to 7zip it into three pieces. So check how much space you have after it is unzipped.

3904,713 in Explorer looks good to me. How much space you have left?

  40. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    Lol 1 GB left

  41. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok, I think it is safe to delete the exe. But don't delete the GHO until we have the laptop up and running.

When that is gone you can do 7zip on the GHO. So it is Add>browse to the GHO. In the window you change compression to Store and then for Split to Volumes enter 1400M then hit OK.

  42. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

    OK i got 4.70gb now.

  43. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

BTW, since it looks like you have about 12gb used on your Linux partition is there anything you need to save?

  44. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

ok done i got 3 parts now.

no i dont need to save anything on linux.

  45. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Not sure if you have to format the USB to FAT32 or not. I would just do it since Gparted isn't doing you much good. So in Computer just right-click on the USB drive and select Format. Choose FAT32 and quick format.

Then put one 7z file at a time on the USB and copy over to your Linux Desktop. I am not entirely sure I tested whether ghost can read a linux partition. I'm going to test that now. Take about 15 minutes.

    Good morning,

Unfortunately, ghost won't read linux partitions. So a few more tries at Gparted (20 min and then I'll figure out command prompt utility instead). You will need to put gparted back on USB. I just used it on what your exact setup should be and have the keyboard commands written down. So when you get booted from the Gparted USB try this with no extra keyboard strokes (not even <enter>):

    Start Gparted
Tab twice to get to sda1 (type ext4)
Down Arrow once to highlight sda1
Alt + P to open partition dropdown
Down arrow once to highlight Resize
    <enter>
Tab twice to get into Free Space Following box
10000 (Here it is important that you Do NOT hit <enter>)
Tab three times to highlight Resize button
    <enter>
Small window should close. Large window should show a pending operation.
Alt + E to open Edit Menu
Down arrow twice to select Apply pending operations.
    <enter>
Warning window will open--Do you want to apply all pending operations.
Tab once to highlight Apply button.
    <enter>
Grey box should open with Progress bar. When operation successful appears.
    Tab twice to close window.
    <enter>
    Alt + G to quit.

We can format the space in regular linux.
