    hello,
i installed Norton Internet Security Pro a couple of days ago and it messed everything up. it deleted my music archive of downloads from Kazaa, numerous programs and shortcuts wouldn't work anymore, i uninstalled it and basically had to re-install all my programs, but the music archive was lost and the programs still wouldn't work like they had done prior to installing Norton Internet Security. just to have some antivirus protection on my computer i installed Norton Antivirus pro 2004, another bad call, it slowed down my system terribly and those programs still wouldn't work properly. i uninstalled that one too and now i'm left with a couple of questions:
    1. is there anything, anything at all i could do to retrieve my music archive?, i was rather fond of it.
    2. how can i make my divx players (global divx player and divx player 5.0.2) support all media files like they used to before those ill-advised installations. i installed all kinds of codecs, more than i had installed before on my computer and still they won't play some files like ASF, WMV and WMA, etc.
i would be grateful for any kind of input.
    thank you. :)

Norton should have quarantined those files, not deleted them unless you specifically chose the option to DELETE infected files when Norton discovers them. At least that used to be the default. Check your quarantined files within Norton and see if they are still there. If they were not quarantined, but deleted by Norton, I'm at a loss as to whether you can recover them or not. Norton's pretty good at wiping data without a trace. It was one of their earliest forteits.

Kazaa, on the other hand, is notorious for spyware, unless you have a hacked version that removed all the spyware and bundled advertisements before you installed it. Even still, any P2P network is a gamble for viruses. I recommend Limewire or Shareaza instead and definitely virus protection before you download anything.

Sounds to me like Norton found quite a bit on your system to confiscate what you are saying is missing.

The DivX Player problem is a codec issue. You just need to find the right one and install it. There's no "one download serves all formats out there" that I know of. I wish there was.

Sorry, but I think Kazaa and P2P downloading without virus scanning was what really messed up your system to begin with. Norton just corrected what it found.

thanks Jasca for the quick reply. i'm gonna check those quarantined files, hopefully there's something to save from there. and then go and search for more codecs. ;)
    thanks again. :)

BTW, here's some good information on DivX codecs you may find worthwhile reading:
