    Hi
I have just done a fresh install of XP home.
I have 2 hdd. Before I started new install I copied all needed programs onto the 2nd disk (which was laballed H: )
Once the new install was completed I tried to open my 2nd disk (now laballed D: ) to start installing my AV etc...

But it would not open and this message appeared.
    windows cannot find
    'RECYCLER\S-8-6-55-100014034-100001610-100019446-1090.com'
Make sure you typed the name correctly , and then try again.
To search for a file , click the start button and then click search.

I thought the reason it would not open was due to the letter being different so I changed it to H: but it still would not open.
I tried my C: drive and found that I got the same message.

I have done many installs with no problems. But now I am totally stumped .
i would be greatful for any Help.

    Thanx

G'day. Not sure what you've done here. Is this correct:

You had 2 hdds. One with XP on it and the other with no OS. You wanted to reinstall XP on the one that already had it.

You connected up both hdds, booted on XP, and copied some programs you wanted to keep onto the 2nd hdd.

You then reinstalled XP Home on the 1st hdd.

You then wanted to copy your programs from the 2nd hdd back onto the first hdd, so you booted on the 1st hdd and tried to access the 2nd, but you couldn't access it. That's when you got that error msg?

If that's correct, then I don't understand what you mean by:
Isn't the C: drive the one you already booted on... the one with your fresh install of XP Home on it?

BTW, did you remember to set the jumpers on the hdd? (Just checking.)

Yes the C: drive is the one with the fresh install.
The pc boots up ok , it's just that when I click on my computer then click on either of the Hard disk drives they won't open and I get that message.
If I use windows explorer I can get into them but that does not solve the problem.
The drives are sata and was working fine for around a year before the new install.
The reason I did a new install as I was having a lot of problems did av check but picked up nothing(with Eset SS).
I usully find it's quicker to do a fresh install then to try and sort out the problem and it cleans up the PC .
    But not this time.

You can't copy programs. You need to install programs where you want them. Programs don't work like files which can be copied from dick to CD to USB devices to other hard drives (internal or external).

    sorry poor choice of words.
The programs are zipped in Hdd 2 ready for me to unzip and install on the main Hdd with the OS.
Any one have any ideas on how to solve this problem.

Right I have just done a new install and I can now access
the C: drive by clicking on it.
But I still get that message when I click on the 2nd Hdd.
After doing a bit of research it seems that the number is a
security identifier and that there is a recycler folder on each Hdd
    for each user.
Not I'm not sure if I read it right as I'm far from an expert.
But could it be that it has been asigned a number but the file was
kept on the C: drive which was formatted and so lost.
I may be way of the mark here ,just trying to think of ideas.
Is it possible to create the file it's looking for.

    Update
I have just found the Recycler folder(it was hidden).
In it there are 3Ms-Dos Apps and 3 files with simular
numbers to the one it's looking for (but not the same )

I've never heard of those Recycler files, so not much help there I'm afraid. Although I wonder if it's a red herring - these obscure things often seem to be. And the fact that a reinstall fixed some of the problem makes it sound like there's something corrupted in there???
What about, just for the heck of it, connecting your 2nd HDD as master on your secondary IDE cable (I assume you have it as slave on your primary at the moment). That might tell us something. (Jumper)
BTW, do you happen to have the jumper on CS on your 2nd HDD. I've heard that that can cause problems.

I've never seen the can't access C: D: E: whatever drive letter with the recycler.com error until about 5 days ago. I've seen it in 3 threads so far this past week. I keep saying it looks like malware for this reason.

Yours is a new install which makes things even harder to track. Please keep us informed if you find anything out. It is a difficult problem to google because of the random file names before .com. I'll let you know if I find anything pertinent.

I've installed Windows with an external HDD attached to the system and running, after installation the external was marked as C as a few system files that should been on the master HDD had been copied to the external drive, while the rest of the XP installation went on the master HDD. Didn't want Windows on anything but C so disconnected the external, and reinstalled.:mad Must have been a BIOS thing or something, never install Window XP with anything attached except the master after that...you may also nee to take ownership of said files.

recycler has to do with Norton; I've seen it in the past. It might be a Ghost thing. Depending how the original computer was set up with a restore partition, that restore might be using Ghost to do the restore.

Did the original hd have a restore partition?

    Problem solved.
I managed to get into the Hdd by using a program called heal disk.
I then took ownership of the folders
as I was getting access denied to the folders.
    Cheers
