help on dvd burner model?

I want to purchase a dvd writer for my dimension 8200. It came with a dvd reader and a cd rw. I would like to replace the cd rw with a dvd rw. I called the mfg. and the Indian lady said I have to get a dvd+rw because my machine is too "old" and that is all that is all that will work, I bought it in June of '02. I was told this is due to the chassis bay size.

Can anyone, without looking at my machine obviously, tell me this is indeed fact?

I would like to purchase an internal dvd rw with plus and minus capibility. My intent is to copy my dv camera tapes to dvd at the tv and then bring them up to the computer and make copies for the family. I was told today that I can not. Only a teac w1043 which was plus r only would work with my chassis which they had in stock by the way. I find this hard to believe but I know I can always learn more.

Is there something I am overlooking? Other hardware like the motherboard (too old?) in the box? Will the drive slot really only fit a certain drive? Geez, it's a big box.

All of my usb slots (1.0) are taken and one includes a 4 slot adaptor so I think an external is out of the question.

Can anyone help with a suggestion. I would be cool if I could just go to the local whatever store, you name it and purchase an internal dvd plus rw of my choice and take out the cd rw and replace it with the new dvd rw and bada bang bada boom I'm making copies of my home videos for mom and dad and sis and and and.

Would you be willing to suggest a product I could get from the local Staples or Circuit City or Best Buy that will do both dvd + and -? Or one to check out at dvdrhelp dot com? I'm hoping not to have to spend a lot but if it will last a couple years I guess the cost will average out so I don't mind spending if it makes sense.
