Help on Samsung external optical drive.

Got the above optical drive. Not usable as the PC would detect it for a while and then the icon would disappear. Can however, accept DVDs and CDs, but won't read. Need help.

 

They need a bit more information:

Make and model of computer
Version of Windows including Service Pack
Model of Samsung external optical drive

This may simply be a setting you need to change. Also, have you tried using a Laser lens cleaner?

 

Model of the external optical drive is Samsung SE-S084.
I have tried it on the following machines
(a) Lenovo Y500 on Windows XP SP3.
(b) MacBook Pro on Windows 7 professional SP1.
(c) IBM Thinkpad R61i on Windows XP SP3.
And I have tried cleaning the above mentioned optical drive using a Philips laser lens cleaner CD.

 

Since, apparently, this optical drive connects via USB cable to the PC and doesn't apparently work on any of the computers you've listed, did you try replacing the USB cable? I've had this type of issue with external drives as well (optical/hard) and replacing the cable solved the issue.

 

If you've tried a different usb cable and had no luck, I would RMA it and save yourself a headache.:wave

I tried upgrading the firmware. And I, also tried a different cable like mdonah and PSCO suggested. Nothing. The drive gets detected, the device manager shows it working properly. And the icon doesn't disappear all of a sudden. Just that the drive doesn't read.
Probably, something wrong with the lasing diode, or the lens, or with both.
