Help on Strange Lag

Hello fellow MajorGeeks , i just would like to ask if you could help me on a problem i currently have,i got this new pc and have Windows 8 64 installed,i play League of Legends,i usually have around 40-50 ping,but suddenly on this pc it sometimes goes up to 500 ping which is unplayable,i of course know its internet related and i checked if somone is connected to my wifi,or if some program is updating or something downloading, but i couldn't find anything so i would like to ask if u can help me find out what is taking up my internet,and are there some programs i should disable via msconfig that would usually update themselves? my pc is Hp Pavilion g6 in case that helps Thanks in advance.
