Why don't you start by explaining your problem in detail right here. When you jump in the middle of someone else's problem, usually you will get overlooked.

    Hi all,

New user here, but long time major geexor. :)

Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.

Please insert your Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium CD into your CD-Rom drive.
When the CD is in the drive, press ENTER.

I'm trying to install a new harddrive on an existing system, i've got a windows xp home xp2 cd, i'm NOT upgrading, i'm just swapping out the hard-drive and using the same cd I put on my system originally.

I take out my old hd, put in the new and try to install windows fresh but get that error when i try to install xp

    HELPPPPP!

    thanks,
    jeff

It's an upgrade version of XP!
You'll need to provide some proof of owning a qualifying lower version of Windows to install using this disc.

That means you'll either have to install OVER one of these operating systems or at least provide the installation CD for one during setup.

You may be in some trouble if you do not have the disc for the previous version, and are currently running XP. You can contact Microsoft for a replacement. The contact info is available at this link

Your best bet is to simply move house lock stock and barrel, not to try to install at all. I have done this on plenty of pcs when going to a larger hard drive.

Clone the entire old drive to the new one using DriveImage or the program whcih came with your new hard drive

Wow, sorry i took so long to reply, it's been frustrating and i just about gave up, but here i am again asking for help, hehe. anywaysss, the install disk is new and VERY clean, I purchased the copy of windows home at comp usa...all i'm doing is swapping out to a SMALLER harddrive in order to determine if the HD is my issue, or not. I pulled the old drive (250mb seagate), put in the NEW drive (60mb, WD) and get this error when trying to install windows:

Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.

Please insert your Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium CD into your CD-Rom drive.
When the CD is in the drive, press ENTER.

The disk is clean, its a new drive...maybe i need to format it first and some of the drivers could be lingering somehow on the other hardware? I dunno, help please, i promise i wont take a month to rspond again, :)

    Thank you ALL in advance!
    Jeff

It's NOT a full version of XP. It's an upgrade version! You can't use your disc to install, unless you can prove that you're upgrading from a legitimate PREVIOUS version of Windows. This is why it is asking you for your Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium CD. You need to insert one of these to carry on with your installation of XP. If you do not have one of these discs, you will need to get one.

The alternative is to use Studio T's suggestion. Take an exact copy of your currently working installation, and move THAT to another hard drive. Post back if you are interested in this solution.

What is the size of the new HD that you installed?? in GB?

xdorkx has made a simple mistake with the prefixes. It's probably safe to assume xdorkx means 250GB and 60GB respectively. You can't get hard drives in the megabytes retail anymore.

The size of the drive doesn't matter in this case anyway. Both of those are suitable. It's the installation media xdorkx is using. The upgrade version of XP won't permit an install without proving that the user isn't trying to shortchange Microsoft. Upgrade versions are cheaper, but require ownership of a previous Windows version.

ahh yes, i'm a retard too, haha 250GB and 60GB indeed. I didnt realize i was purchasing an upgrade version though... :(
The version I purchased was $100.00 at comp usa, i dont recal seeing that it was an upgrade version. For what's it's worth, I was installing winxp home (the one i bought) over a previous install of xp PRO which was maybe not quite 100% Legal... Anything else I can do if i dont have any older copies of windows lying around?

Thansk btw, i appriciate your and everybody elses help on this. :) :cool

Well, the price sounds about right for an upgrade version, and installing over XP pro would allow you to do it.

Sadly, there's nothing you can do legitimately now without buying a license for one of these older OS's. You might check Ebay for a cheap copy of Win 98 or something.

You could try Studio T's suggestion, but we can't help you now that we know it's illegal, as the site owners are liable for piracy. (I think - asking a mod their opinion)

Thanks to Mada_Milty , and Studio..you mean basically slaving the hard-drive, is that correct?

Than you ALL again btw, i'm just trying to do the right thing, hehe
