    Hi there,

My PC (not this laptop I am using) has a nasty virus/malware.

Every time I try to start anything, I get a message that says Application cannot be executed. The file [insert prog name].exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

    I mean EVERY program.

I have tried to follow the "read and run me first" instructions. I have d/l'd ccleaner portable to a USB, but it won't work either.

I open the folder and then get another warning message/window. This one says "Spyware Alert! Vulnerabilities found. Your computer is infected by spyware -34 serious threats have been found while scanning your files and registry. It is strongly recommended that you disinfect your computer and activate Realtime secure protection against future intrusions" There is a link to tell me why I need protection, and two buttons: "Activate Your antivirus software' and 'Stay unprotected'

In the meantime, I am getting a 'pop-up' warning in the bottom right corner that says:
"Antivirus software alert (This is the window header)
    INFILTRATION ALERT
Your computer is being attacked by an internet Virus. It could be a password stealing attack, a trojan - dropper or similar.

DETAILS (note- these change each time)
    Attack from: 200.105.75.13, port 58144
    Attacked port: 63983
    Threat: Win32/nuqel.E

Do you want to block this attack?"

    Please help!

    Jenni :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Have you tried running in safe boot mode?
Have you tried using safe boot mode with command prompt?
Have you tried logging into a different user account?
Have you tried brining up Task Manager to kill processes? Do you see a process named sysguard.exe

You did not even tell us what version of Windows you are using? Also do you have a bootable copy of your Windows CD/DVD?

Have you tried running in safe boot mode?
    Yes, No difference

Have you tried using safe boot mode with command prompt?
    I don't know how

Have you tried logging into a different user account?
    No, I haven't

Have you tried brining up Task Manager to kill processes?
As I mentioned, NO programs will start including task manager. I get a message box every time I try to start anything and it says "Application cannot be executed. The file [insert prog name].exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"
I have not clicked anything on these boxes when they come up, I just let them stay there.

I know the problem is Antivirus Live and I have found information on bleepingcomputer.com on how to remove it, but I am yet to try. Would you recommend I try that first? (before wasting your time here?)

I am sorry for the lack of information in my initial post, at the time I was tired and frustrated AND desperate!

The computer in question is a few years old. it is running Windows XP, and I keep it updated. I have a bootable disc, but sometimes the CD drive doesn't read discs.

    Thanks for taking the time,

    JEnni :)

From the bleepingcomputer.com link. If so how did your run anything since you told us you could not run anything at all. Not even in safe mode which I specifically asked.

    I wish I knew!

The only things I can think of is that when I followed the bleeping computer instructions (which I had open on my laptop) was to start the PC in 'safe mode with networking' after it had been switched off for a day or two. I was surprised that IE worked, which I opened as per the instructions, but guessed (probably in error!) that it might have been to do with the fact that I only use firefox, and perhaps IE was unaffected?

When I originally tried to follow the instructions here, I had RE-started it in 'safe mode', following the discovery of the virus.

I don't know if the re-start v's cold start could make a difference?

Anyway, sorry to have taken your time! I am having performance issues with my laptop now, but I promise I will make every attempt to follow the guide and give better information next time before asking for help!

    Happy new year!
    Jenni :)
