    Hello,

My computer was being fixed some weeks back and the day I received it all of a sudden I was bombarded with popups and annoying programs trying to install themselves, particularly winantivirus pro 2007. No matter what I tried my computer kept getting worse so I turned to the internet and found this site.

I've read and completed all the steps in the Read and Run Me First Guide. I couldn't get CounterSpy to install right so after several attempts I ran AVG. Everything was fine until step 6A. I couldn't get Bitdefender and Panda to install while in safe mode so I returned to normal to complete those steps. Other than that I hope I followed the instuctions correctly, it has been a major battle trying to complete everything because all the popups freeze the internet and I have to get out and start all over again, not to mention that winantispy will not stop coming back!

Let me know if I need to correct anything, I'm kinda new at all this. I'm posting my logs now, any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you
    Rene

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You did not quite get the renaming of HijackThis done properly. And this is critical for Vundo (aka Virtumonde) type infections which you may have.

    You have this: C:\Program Files\analyse.exe\HijackThis.exe

You need to have this: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe

You renamed the folder not the file as is required.

Please fix this and then run the below procedure.

FIrst uninstall this Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_03 as requested in step 6 of the READ ME. This could have contributed to your getting infected with Virtumonde.

Now run this Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and do not attach the requested log right away. Run it multiple times until it comes up clean and then attach the final log.

Now also attach new logs from ShowNew and HJT.

Okay, I think I fixed the problem, uninstalled Java 2, and ran the Vundo Removal. I ran the Vundo multiple times, it's come up clean over and over again except the first time when it found everything and removed them then rebooted. I've never seen a log show up it just says Done Searching for Files. No Infected files were found. I don't know what I'm missing, sorry.

Here are the two new logs you requested.

Thank you sooo much for all your help!!!

The VundoFix log is where the procedure tells you it is. That is C:\vundofix.txt
    Please attach it as requested.

According to your HJT log I see Norton Antivirus, Yahoo Antivirus and also CA Isafe. However your uninstall list (in the ShowNew log) does not show all of these. Exactly what antivirus programs do you have installed and which one do you plan to keep since only one can be kept on your PC.

Now let's get started on the rest of your cleanup and there is a lot to do!!
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to dns cache reader
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteDNSCacheReader into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Now re-run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PowerDirector] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\TPDIR\setup.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IpWins] C:\Program Files\Ipwindows\ipwins.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [csrss] C:\WINDOWS\csrss.exe
    O4 - Startup: TA_Start.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\thinksnet.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\ldcore.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: opnoolk - opnoolk.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I haven't had a chance to start on the cleanup yet, but I wanted to turn in this log and ask a question on the antivirus before I got started. Norton Antivirus came with the computer and eventually expired, I then switched to Yahoo Antivirus, comes as a free package with my internet, and I've never heard of CA Isafe. I thought I was only running one, Yahoo Antivirus, however I uninstalled it before I started all the steps in the Read and Run Me First Guide. I looked again in the add and remove programs and didn't see any of the above antivirus programs, is there somewhere else I should look to finish uninstalling these?

Again, Thank You So Very Much!!! You're the best!:)

CA Isafe is probably what Yahoo provided for their antivirus. You still show signs of both Norton and Yahoo's stuff in your logs. For example the below are from Norton and Yahoo
Plus in your Uninstall programs list (see the end of the newfiles.txt log), I can see the below:
    "DisplayName"="AT&T Yahoo! Applications"
    "DisplayName"="LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)"
    "DisplayName"="LiveUpdate 1.7 (Symantec Corporation)"

Perhaps the AT&T Yahoo Apps is where the CA Isafe and other stuff came from. Look to uninstall it. Also if you don't have Norton, you don't need LiveReg or LiveUpdate. Uninstall them too.

I uninstalled the programs you listed for the antivirus, hopefully that got it all. I've done all the steps for the cleanup and now I'm posting the logs.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV CfgWiz] C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\Cfgwiz.exe /R

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\T4 <--- the whole folder

    Now run Ccleaner

    Now reboot in normal mode

You keep forgetting to answer my question:

Since your logs are clean, I will assume you are not having any.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
